Garage door opener/remote control details?

Does anyone know any technical details for the garage door opener? I've got a remote garage door, and an automatic barrier at the office car park, so ditching two keyfob thingies and having the buttons on my rear view mirror would be pretty neat.

But how do I know that the MINI system will be 100% compatible with the two? I know something of my garage door system (if I can find the manual, hiding in my study), but I have almost know idea what the details are for the car park barrier.

Anyone know where to find a list of what the MINI option works with? Are there any known issues, anything that it *doesn't* work with?

The MINI remote operates on the Homelink system so if your door and barrier use this too it will work. But not if they don't!

I suspect that an element of programming will be involved with your garage installation which will not be possible with your work installation.

Thanks for that info. The "Homelink" name was enough to take me to a website where they list compatible devices - and both of my remotes are on the list.

Programming is pretty simple - it's a matter of "teaching" the in-car remote what your normal remote does (basically by just pressing the buttons). You don't need access to the receiver at all (unless the device is incompatible with Homelink - some devices can be made compatible by fitting an extra widget receiver-side).

Why is this sort of information not available on the MINI UK website or at my local dealership? I doubt that I'm the only person who won't buy something unless I can be sure in advance that it's going to work.

I can vouch for their customer support too: I hit a snag, phoned them and got through to a guy called Walter in Germany who sorted me with great patience even though English is his second language and I speak no German.

Some garage door openers that have "rolling codes" do require that you program the remote in the car, then press a "learn" button on the door opener while you press the button in the car a few times so the opener learns the sequence somehow. I had to do that with my door opener here in the US. I don't know if that is necessary with your office barrier, probably the only way to find out is to try it!

Now proud owner of a 2007 Cooper S!

ok, time for a daft question. Is this a standard feature in the MINI? I have an electric garage door, and would be interested if I could open it from the mini. I currently have the opener velcroed under the dash board.

Dunno about Aussie-spec cars but it's optional in the UK. You get 3 separately-programmable buttons on the bottom edge of the interior mirror that can open, in my case, a gate and two garages.

Ahhh. I thought it was a rocker switch set into the cluster above the mirror.

Does the mirror move when operating the switches?

Yeh, I don't have them. I guess it's optional here also.

My '08 Clubman has the controls on the mirror but I dunno about other other models. (There's a pic here. )

The mirror only moves if you are ham-fisted!

And is the black box ahead of the mirror also part of the deal. I'm thinking along the lines of retro fitting here.

No; the black box is part of the auto screen-wipe and headlight systems.

I can't see why this couldn't be retro-fitted as I assume it just needs a power feed. But that's only a guess so perhaps Mickey or one of our other electrical whizzes can help?
