DIY Radio Service Menu (Hidden!)

Not sure if anyone's found this before....

I was chatting to an old mate the other night (who used to work in a mini dealership), and he said that there was a hidden service menu on the new Mini's..... - there's a sequence using the m button with the ignition on.

Well, here it is...

Key in slot
Ignition on (start-stop button pushed, but clutch up)
Turn stereo ON
Key out

Key in slot
Ignition on (start-stop button pushed, but clutch up)
Turn stereo OFF
Turn stereo ON
Hold "m" until the service menu appears, then let go.
(note, all this has to happen within 8 seconds of the stereo off)

Just be careful - there are some options that can be changed - use the right-hand +/- buttons to cycle the displays.

Interestingly, there is a software/revision display showing, so might be of use to someone....

Note - changing radio regions clears all presets, so be warned!

What model MINI do you have? This is the one that sounds very familiar to the boost radio from the 02-06 and 07-08 cabrio. Typically you can turn the radio on and before pushing any other buttons simply hold the "M" button down for about 10 seconds. In the menu there are a few things that you can do...

1. Test the display.
2. Set speed setting sensitivity for loudness. (Non HK only)
3. Region setting
4. Signal strength
5. Fimeware version number (nothing that we can do with to date).

and a few others.... The region setting was handy for me as the USA only uses the odd stations to tune in. So, if you are in USA mode and in Europe, you can't get half of the stations. However, if you change that it changes the mode to allow the additional stations. Once you select what you want, you simply turn the radio off and on and all is well.

The radio on the R56 is supposed to be different. I have yet to try it so if someone will confirm it; it would be great to know.

it's a 2008 S, born in April - standard CD/Boost (but soon to be enhanced with amp and speakers)

Had a bit more of a play today - from memory, the options are:

Firware/software version
display test - 7 options
aerial selection - auto/1/2/3
dsp/volume (mine simpy says DSP 0/VL xxx where xxx is the current volume)
signal quality - doesn't seem to ever change
frequency / rds check (updates in real-time - some changes are possible)
continent selection - EUR/USA/OCE/JAP
speed sensitive volume 0 to 5
Key Memory on/off
an interesting mode - Line Tool, RDS Tool, OS Tool....... haven't a clue what these do(!)

I think that was about it...

Oh yep - you can also do this with the engine runnning - just turn off the radio, turn it back on and hold m

As I mentioned I am curious if this is a cabrio... The cabrio's are based on the 02-06 build (supercharged and all).

It's not a cabrio - it's a 2008 S, hard-top.

Any suggestions for those who have the integrated NAV?

Line Tool, RDS Tool and OS Tool all sound very interesting....

Cool to know that the same information is available in the R56! Thanks for clarifying that.

* Turn the controller three positions to the left.
* Turn the controller one position to the right.

I had a go at that in my car, and it didn't seem to work. Don't know if I was doing something wrong, as you press the controller down it selects whatever you hover over as normal.

It's a Mini Adventure.

There seems to be a bit of art and timing to open the back door.

Here's a clickable link- I tried it this morning and didn't get anything either. Someone else posted that they tried again from the setup menu and it worked. I guess I'll try that- or maybe my seconds are too long or something...

Curious if your cell works with the Second Gen MINI?

umm you could also press the speech button on your steering wheel and say service. that will pull up the service display to check control messages and service warnings.

Not the same service menu. This menu allows for configuration changes in the radio stack. A number of US car have been delivered with the RDS set to Europe vs. the US. Access to the menu will preclude a trip to the somewhat limited dealer network.
