You've got it exactly right. the car mfrs purposely cover up the actual exterior, knowing that people will be dying to get early looks at the new versions. The bustles and bumps won't be on the final version.
Not being a current MINI owner, I have no basis for comparison, and I thought the interior was kind of cool. Is that an accelerometer in the middle of the big dial (the curved line)? so you can tell exactly how quickly you're taking those corners at high rates of speed?

When will the '07 be on the dealer floor? How many years aftere that will you be able to get one? That may be about the time when I'm in a position to acquire one.
Car design needs to evolve, it gets stale if it remains all the same for too long. The BMW 2002 was a classic of it's time, but likely wouldn't sell well on the lot today.
