JCW Stage 1 tuning kit released

The kit will be made available sometime in July but an exact date has not yet been published.

The new JCW tuning kit drives the MINI Cooper S to completely new heights of performance: The kit boosts the output of the Twin Scroll turbocharged engine from 175 h.p to 192 h.p (141 kW). And the maximum torque is 250 Nm between 1750 and 5000 rpm. In fact with the overboost function, temporary peak values as high as 270 Nm are possible in the range from 1750 to 4500 rpm. This means the MINI Cooper S accelerates from 0 - 62 mph in only 6.8 seconds and onto a maximum speed of 145 mph (where permissible).

Package includes:
  • JCW air filter system
  • Stainless steel sports exhaust
  • Exhaust manifold for operation at higher temperatures
  • Turbocharger air filter air guide
  • Modified engine electronics system
  • Activation code for engine control unit (specific to chassis number)
  • JCW emblems for front grille and tailgate
  • JCW engine badge with serial kit number
  • JCW certificate of authenticity
The retail price on the kit is £1463 inc VAT and FITTING.

Taken from another forum post It looks like it's officially released to the dealers and not as high a price as i expected, especially with the discount.

........................Off to phone local dealer to add to order....................more money

For £1500 for an OEM kit, compared to the first gen options, that's a relative bargain.

Just what I was thinking Paul.

Full exhaust, airfilter and remap from any third party tuner would be more than £1210 fitted. Add in full warranty and the fact that it will keep a good percentage of value after 3 years means it's a cheap option.

It is fairly cheap, but you aren't getting a huge amount of power increase. In respect of horsepower per pound, it's probably comparible to the works tuning kit on the R53 etc.

I'm a bit disapointed thus far, I know it's only a stage 1, but was expecting more. Especially when most other hot hatches output 200bhp+ as standard now. Perhaps there's a limit to what's reliably possible out of the new 1.6...?

True, but bear in mind that the standard S ( 175HP ) beats a clio 197 and the Golf GTI and keeps pace with the Ford ST2. Testers coming in with 0-62 in 6.5 secs.

With an Extra 17hp this thing will be quick enough to beat the R53 Works for sure.

The standard S is probably enough to beat the R53 Works based upon what happened on Sunday's rolling road event at the Lakes Run.

So I read, the 192 kit just adds in a bit of a safety factor

This kit must make it into a sub 15sec 0-100mph hatch.

this could be very interesting, if expensive by the time the suspension, brakes and wheels have been upgraded too

does anyone have any idea, from previous stage one level exhaust upgrades, whether this is likely to make the car much louder? (not what I'm looking for at all)

As I live across the pond I really hope the upgraded JCW exhaust heralds the return of the burble.

Yeah, the biggest thing missing on the R56MCS.

But the new car does burble, and it's a MUCH nicer tone than either of the first generation S (pre and post facelift). I thought the first version was really good, second one sounded like it was trying to hard. The second generation S has a great exhaust tone, burble, bangs and all.

Still less than you would hope for though in terms of power...its put to shame by many of the other GTi type cars on the market who are looking at 220-230bhp off the shelf.

Yeah but these are all bigger segment cars, Astra, golf, focus etc. The highest other than that is the Clio 197 and that gets beat by the standard 175 MCS.

Headline power figures don't really matter......................the performance figures are more important.

IMHO

True...just its not quite as ... I dunno special as I would hope for. Then again the 1500 price tag may be a reflection of this as the R53 was 210bhp with a 3500 tag so maybe they know its not as "impressive" a figure so the cost is a bit lower?

Still be nice to see some JCW R56s though

But those are models, this is an upgrade. I'd expect a JCW Works model to be closer to the figures you're talking about above. And I'd expect the cost to reflect that too!

I'm hoping we'll find out more about next weekend in the style they presented the GP.

Not in the states it doesn't. The burble and pop are missing for some reason. I'm assuming it has something to do with emissions standards. The JCW exhaust should fix this though, can't wait to order!

Japper, can you point me the source of this info please. I want to pass it to my dealer so that he can verify as I've just ordered an MCS and want to add the kit.

Cheers,

Steve

It's from the dealers own network/system. So they'll have it.
