R56 JCW Performance Tips...?

Safe road conditions permitting....

What have you found has gotten you the best results in terms of giving the engine a bit of stick?

When is the best time to shift up for example - is it at the torque curves best which I am guessing is at the torque output peak at 4500 RPM? - in theory your then riding the best of all that torque revving any higher torque wise is a waste technicially isnt it?

Or is the best time to shift up at the engines peak in terms of BHP which I guess is the top end of around 6000rpm...but then this defeats the torque theory above...

In theory in a straight line its all that grunty torque that gives the R56 JCW its edge - so what gives what are you lot all doing out there?

Personally I'm on overboost at all times and generally driving around in 2nd and 3rd gear at all times ;-) Sport mode is always on i like the twitchyness it gives the car makes it feel sharper...

I'm personally finding using the torque instead of revving it to the max is giving me the best ummmph out of the car..

Would be interested in others thoughts on this one.....

I find that flooring the throttle and changing gear at about 5300 rpm is fun! Only if it's dry though

hmmmm.......good q 543, i'd liek to know too. Personally i usually rev to the BHP limit of 6k rpm but that maybe due to my days with a honda s2000 where the vtec power band is always at the top end 9k rpm!! be interesting to hear other thoughts though.

I'm planning on taking the JCW to Santa Pod 1/4 mile strip hence the question Come on all contribute lets keep this JCW section active its soooo long in the tooth with posts!

Coming from an S2000 I am guessing you are loving all that extra torque now?

Whats the best way for lift off should I kill all traction control and LSD etc?

Hey if your up for it lets arrange a JCW santa pod day lets put all those R53 Vs R56 arguments to test!!!!

Well, you will need to look at a plot of the power and torque. Torque is the force that your engine can exert, and the power is the rate at which it can generate it. The peak torque for the R56 JCW is acheived from 2000-4750 rpm (on overboost, 270Nm). At 2000 rpm you are generating this torque at a rate of about 80 bhp. At 4750 rpm you are generating the same amount of torque but at a rate of about 180 bhp. Quite a difference.

If you keep increase the engine speed to 6000 rpm, you are only generating 220Nm of torque, but you are generating it at maximum rate of 192 bhp. From looking purely at the data, I would think 5750 rpm is the optimum to change up. At this rpm, you are kicking out 230Nm at a rate of about 188 bhp

If I wanted to overtake I would select a gear that put me at around 4500 rpm. This is pure speculation by the way, as I have never driven an R56 JCW. Thats the best way to decide when to change

*my speculation is based on the graph found on the JCW website.

Id be pretty confident in saying the way of achieving the fastest quarter mile in any petrol car would be to change up at peak bhp, if you were to change up at peak torque youd be in 6th at about 50 mph

thanks all - me personally I too have always redlined my cars with the quickest shift I can make going up in gear. Was very interested about the torque theory though I know it probs doesnt give you the best time but am trying to get my head around the theory...

Peak power doesnt have to come at the redline

Yep, keep the revs as high as you can for max power.
