the psa/citroen/bmw engine is going to have 170bhp and 240nm torque.

Is this news or old hat...?

Thanks Paul, I should have researched it better I suppose.

I'm a little surprised that the new engine would appear to not be more powerful than the current one - It means that the Cooper S will have the same power in 2007 that it has now. That surprises me when every other manufacturer is putting ever more powerful engines in their performance versions of their hot hatch style cars....

Won't the Cooper S seem just a little 'weedy' with 170bhp....??

That's what I thought when I first heard this news! The torque is pretty good though, and the engine should be much ligther than the current lump. Hopefully the car itself doesn't grow much (or at all ) in size & weight.

I've seen a few fairly detailed specs and it all looks good to me.

Well they weren't saying a great deal about either the engine or the next gen Mini, but they were talking about this crazy Peugot 3 wheel racer. However, in passing they did mention that the peugot car was extremly light, and this was partly because of the new lightweight engine - so that bodes well.....

That little 3-wheel spyder has been cooked up with the same recipe used by Morgan over 80 years ago and still winning races today (still as tasty, too ) Wonder if it will prompt MINI to launch a new generation speedster? BTW, no-one has responded to my query about the new generation car's gearbox: anyone know whether the turbo engine comes with a dedicated gearbox or whether it will be mated with the current Getrag?

probably a dedicated gear box judging by the amount of research there putting into them at the mo...

and i think there holding the HP down and putting in low pressure turbos to keep the price down...

if you wack in a massive turboed engine its costs a large amount... (or so a dealer in the know told me)

Probably keeping 170 for the standard S as it's a nice driveable balance for a mainstream market. The car is easily quick enough for most people, and yet still right safe and easy to drive. The output seems perfectly balanced with the current chassis in terms of putting a grin on your face but not scaring too many people and also offering a smooth steady drive for anyone who wants it. Want more thrills, Works time!
Bit like the new Golf GTI. Power's been set right for the car's chassis.

Now then we have the Astra GSI which is a scary beast by all accounts, sure I bet it's massive fun but it'll not be the easiest car for a lot of folks to live with.

I agree with keeping it where it is.
