From Gabe's Motoringfile.com it's reported the 2007 Cooper S will be 180 lbs lighter!

I'd take that with a pinch of salt.

Really.

That would be a shame if it's a beat up.

Despite my skepticism, 180 is not out of the question with the aluminum block and frame--does still seem a bit high though. Who knows, maybe the tires will be filled with helium this go round....

In case you missed it, in our exclusive reports from the test drive Detlev Welter and his team confirmed the new Cooper S to weigh around 10kg more than the outgoing model.

Sorry I couldn't confirm and clear this up earlier, but embargo times cant be broken.

Oh thats too bad, I thought the aluminum block would help matters a little. From the press release the Cooper would be a tad bit lighter than the current model, that would be nice, although HP and torque remains pretty much the same (but it does have 6spd instead of 5 for the Cooper).

Sounds like the cooper's performance would only be marginally better than the current model.

That is what I thought I saw, 10kgs (22lbs) heavier, instead of 180 lbs lighter. Bummer.

one of the artilces mentioned that bmw touted the weight savings as offsetting new structure stiffening and crashworthiness improvements for a zero net impact. ( 10 kg is zero for all intents and purposes )

The new engine has a lot more torque at lower and higher engine speeds, because of the double vanos and valvetronic. I'm positive it will be noticibly faster.
The old Cooper only had a peak at 4500rpm, and doesn't pull well below 3000rpm. The new one will be different. Maybee the torque curve will even bee flat (which would spoil some of the fun).

The new engine's will have a higher compression ratio:
Cooper: 11:1
CooperS: 10,5:1
Which will bee good for fuel consumption.

Variable oil pump, which save's up to 1,25kW

I guess, in reality, that's not a surprise, but still a shame nonetheless.
