The Cooper is N/A not turbo. They stated very clearly that the scoop was not functional.

I think its just a sill marketing tool, left there to convince people that the S is still the sportier model like others have said.

I doubt it has been put in for the JCW to use it, as surely they would have just saved the bonnet for use on the JCW to give that the more appeal and sell more of them, just as they are rumoured to having different body kits on the JCW.

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

Sorry Paul, didn't see this thread!
It serves no purpose, looks like a wannabe Supercharge intake!

I think the debate over the contrivedness (is that a word?) of the slot is kind of ironic when in reality, the whole car is kind of contrived.....

You could say that of anything at all that has any design element that goes beyond the purely functional. Where do you draw the line?

I am sure somebody will find a use for it Even if it only for model differences, think it looks OK.
Besides where would I put my UJ if it was not there

I really love the slot on the current car, so it kinda upsets me to come to the conclusion that the slot is there for nothing more than looks. And because of this, if they couldnt find a use for it, and if they couldnt come up with something better, then I think they should have ditched it. I'm sure there must have been lots of arguements about it at the design stages.....

Saying its probably there for 'future JCW usage' is i think just rediculous.

Lets admit it, the 'face' of the current Mini is near perfect. Its cheeky, loveable, full of charachter, and easy to modify for a different look.... Nothing about the 'face' of the new car seems to move this forward. The honeycoombe grill leaves me flat, sure they will change it for production.

I wouldn't so sure on the grille changing to be honest, but they will have alternatives.

Thats why I think the Scoop stayed on the car.... because 'class' conscious BMW believed people would need a major differential between their base model and their performance model...

I think the last thing a class concious BMW people would want is a built in point of ridicule. AFAIK all car manufacturers build in differences between the different performance models, usually using badges, alloys, exhaust pipes and exclusice colours. But a big scoop on the bonnet that does nothing other than make you go a bit flustered when people ask what it's for? Not good for any car IMO but really bad for the image of the fun and unpretentious character of a MINI.

Exactly! Two bonnets make absolutely no sense.

I hate the fact that the scoop does nothing. If I went with a new S, I'd be tempted to change the bonnet to the Cooper bonnet...

I'm sure if the car DIDN'T have the slot, we'd all be reading a thread decrying the fact that it had gone.....

Kinda daft really - If they wanted to physically distinguish between an 'S' & a Cooper, there must have been better, less expensive, less drag-inducing ways of doing it.

(Modifed, low-drag bumpers, sills, spoiler for example?)

Where is the intercooler located now, anyway?

I was just thinking that if MINI do read these forums (which they do) I remember when it was announced supercharger was to be dropped, everyone posted that they would miss the scoop!
So that was probably one of the reasons why they designed into the R56 model, I wonder if they will read this feedback and change there ideas?!

Purely cosmetic scoop!? Dead against it. Just plain wrong!

When it comes to changing mine in a few years (when the MCSC is out and so are the new model wrinkles) I'm hoping there'll be an option to have a plain (Cooper type) bonnet.

I really love the scoop (and curves) of my current bonnet but if it was just cosmetic I'd feel it was a complete fraud.

I would say that there is some substance in the idea that it will provide cooling in the turbo area. Unusually the manifold and turbo are at the front of the engine, and the turbo sits closer to the bonnet than standard exhaust, I would say that this should require more room, and a degree of cooling to protect the paintwork on the bonnet, or else a serious amount of heat-sheilding .
Paul I assume that this is intercooled engine and that the intercooler is behind the grill?

If it has no function then IMHO it shouldn't be there.

The original (classic) S had little to distinguish it from the standard Cooper IIRC and I think they should perhaps take a leaf out of that book rather than faking it - form and function, form and function.

Anyway, there are other ways to differentiate the S from the standard Cooper if that's what's so important but this move seems to me to go against the original ethos of the classless Mini that was alluded to above and the marque will IMHO be all the poorer for it.

MINIROG - exactly! You have hit the nail on the head, this is the definitive reason why it should NOT be there.

Cheers
