Offline | What about the little black grills on the back bumper? What are they for except cosmetic? I think the scoop says "S". |

Offline | Perhaps BMW are doing themselves a favour once they realise the Peugeot / Citroen engine won't be upto the job and they have to quickly insert a supercharged engine back in No supercharger then no scoop, they may as well have put a scoop sticker on the front and kept the standard cooper bonnet Reading through all the different threads on the new model I'm quite surprised how many people dislike the new look, I wasn't expecting such negativity and shows how much the current model is liked and loved............. ![]() |

Offline | Why would a mostly BMW developed engine, produced at a BMW engine plant, be called a Peugeot/Citroen engine? That's even worse than calling the current unit a Chrysler engine, BMW had a lot more input on this one than the current one (apparently). |

Offline | Anything remotely linked to Peugeot / Citroen is a no no in my book, what input does the French Company have? I would still say its a Frog engine masquerading as a German I always thought the current engine was a Chrysler?......... Interesting what I read in the daily mail today on the new S........Bad point was not enough 'sporty' rasp from the engine/exhaust to match it's performance ![]() |

Offline | I think the new exhuast note is a great improvement on the current one ('05 model year onwards), which I think can sound too hollow and tiny at times, like it's trying to hard (I own one, so no offence intended, just my opinion on it). The new exhaust not us much more deep and rumbly and it still pops/burbles nicely too. Sounds great speeding my on the track/slalom! The current engine is a Tritec unit, lots on that on here already though: http://www.tritecmotors.com.br/engli...percharged.htm If I had to chose blindly a from a British built BMW/PSA engine or a Brazillian built Chrysler/BMW engine I'd probably go with the BMW/PSA one, as my only previous ownership experience of a Pug was a 205 1.9 GTI many moons ago, and the engine in that was bonkers, but great fun. The major input from PSA is the experience of mass producing engines of this size/nature, technology wise it's very much BMW lead. One "downside", according to the head of the project, is the fact the engine is the wrong way around, exhaust at the front. |

Offline | Thanks for explaining Paul.............even though it's a fairly low tech unit I've always liked the Tritec engine in the S...........anything with a PSA link gives me the heebie jeebies, as my neighbour has a Pug 307 and it sounds Also reliability if the new engine has Pug parts? |

Offline | Lets hope it won't be like the current gearboxes ...................I'm sure your right.........but then again BMW seemed to drag their feet where their engineering excellence was slightly off the rails regarding reliability. |

Offline | I think it's swings and roundabouts, luckily the Getrag in my S has been OK although I've always had the rumblings at idle that most S's seem to get. One of my neighbours has just swapped his One for the latest model going from the Midland to the Getrag gearbox and felt a little peeved as the Getrag seems alot noiser than his 03 One, think it's luck of the draw which hopefully will be sorted with the replacement model ![]() |

Offline | It's funny how people think the current engine is low tech - must have something to do with the fact that Chrysler had major design input The reality is that the only low tech parts of it are its iron block and that it doesn't have variable valve timing. The rest of it is up there with the best. I'm sure the new engine will be a honey, but as my current 01/06 MCS will be a long term car for me, I'm glad it doesn't have variable valve timing or an alloy block More parts (or significantly more in the case of the new engine) = more possibilities for things to go wrong over the life of the engine ![]() Jan 06 MCS Checkmate |

Offline | I think I've just realised what the scoop on the 2nd gen MCS is for . It's a design feature for the Royal Mail to help deliver the mail quicker . The new MCS is in fact a mobile post box . It will save time as there will be no need for slow diesel vans, moving slowly between fixed post boxes to pick up all the letters . So if you have ever dreamed of being Postman Pat, then buy a red one along with a black & white cat and your dream will have come true . The only down side will be cleaning your engine bay . Current MCS owners just degrease there engine , while 2nd gen owners will have to remove all the junk mail from pizza delivery firms and curry houses first . |

Offline | As a current Cooper owner, I would certainly consider the S again on the next go round, but I would hope that by then going "scoop-less" will be an option. Not that there is anything wrong with the current S's styling, but if I had one I'd probably de-badge it and get rid of the spoiler. I prefer a more stealthy look. |

Offline | But it does serve a purpose, it distinguishes the S from the Cooper. Its like saying the chrome side vents with S logo fitted to the current S serve no purpose. Why shouldn't it have the same black plastic ones as the Cooper. ![]() |
