That Front Grille - What Were They Thinking?

I have to say I hate it

Its the one big thing that is turning me off the new car - I can't understand why a designer would cut the botton off the grille and give us a trout pouted , fishy looking grille - the honeycomb version on the S is the worst looking version of all as well.

It is the one aspect of the new car which might convince me not to buy one sadly - but as its a significant feature, its one we can hardly ignore - what are your thoughts?

will be interesting to see if they drop the slats completly or if the offer a chrome version of the honeycomb.

If they are all honeycomb then what the hell will the aero kit have

cant wait for that!

there will be a slat version, but apparently this honeycomb thing is the planed MCS grill

I'm with you Aiden, it looks cheap, it doesn't look MINI/mini, and the shape, well it looks to end too soon.

I don't like the way the lower section of the bumper seems to flow into the upper grill, this looks too much like Audi to me, and they should both be seperate like the current flow of the MCS.

If I can't change this part or it doesn't change from now to production, I am with you, it will put me off buying it

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

I have to agree, I'm not feeling good about what I'm seeing today...I miss Frank Stephenson and apparently so does MINI.

...now if I could only get that Rabbit commercial tune outta my head...

...or maybe I just didn't understand the question...

From the Press Release ...

Quote:
Evolution in exterior design, revolution in the cockpit.

The exterior ... 60mm extra length, a bonnet with a non-functional scoop and without headlights that can "search the heavens" ... perhaps I could live with it.

But the interior ... it's REVOLTING

Rabbit tune?

Perhaps you should get a job at MINI Craig, I know you have impressed many with your work, and would keep the design true to its origins

What happened to the rumored old style grilles? would love to see it with an old Morris style grille.......

Generally I like the car - but the grille is a major turnoff, In classic Mini terms the black plastic grille was kept for the bottom of the range models..........

my thoughts too, the grill might suit a mini city, but not a MCS

I'd love to see a classic style wavey grill on a new MINI

I think the whole issue with the exterior is that after all the rumors that they were going to take more cues from the Classic they have not really captured the front end styling. Looking at it again I think I am really going to miss the sidelights - that was part of the Mini's face that gave the car its character.

I just hope they change the front grille, as you say it looks cheap, doesn't suit the car and is way off the mark in terms of heritage

I would hope somebody somewhere is scribbling away redesigning it, either aftermarket or from MINI It really looks a bit Peugeot like to me aka wide mouth frog

The sidelights are still low down in the bumper, sharing space with the (optional) fog lights.

If they don't care, I guess the only way is to vote with our feet.

Thing is, I don't think the R56 will sell as well if it looks ugly or disjointed. The GP sold on the strength of being a limited edition, and a relative bargain. The current car was bought by many people, for many varying reasons - I think one of them was that it was an appealing, coherent design - you could even call it 'cute' or 'smiley' from the front even, and that look appealed to a lot of people.

What does the R56 look like? As Laura said, Peugeot-like? Yep. Not a compliment that. I think its like an unfinished aero grille, that someone forgot to add the bottom section to?

It just looks wrong.

It makes me sad today, as a MINI fan, to hear myself saying that I couldn't contemplate buying one now - that grille is a deal breaker, the whole frontal look is actually.

If there isn't an alternative look, I wouldn't spend my hard earned cash on another MINI And that statement DOES break my heart.

I think its awful too. I'm with Aiden and its one of the things that I don't like and is putting me off the whole car. I really like the pics of the Cooper S that someone has replaced the black grille for a chrome slat one, thats much nicer. I really like the back end though.

I suppose I can just approach my new MINI from behind all the time! Would that work?

I think you've summed up quite well there Aiden. There seems to be a design overlap with the latest small euro hatchbacks of having the dopey 'smile' on the bottom bumper of cars. Whilst it works on some cars, it seems to make the Mini look a little dorky. I think that the previous facelift introduced this look, but the car still had enough strong design elements on the front end to get away with it.... however, from what I've seen of the new car, it makes the face of the car look too bland and gives the car an almost "in-bred pretty cousin with nothing going on behind her eyes" look...

I know what I'm talking about, after all, I'm from Wales...

I must be the only person that actaully likes the front of the new one.

I like the chrome accent around the mesh grille, I like the headlights, I like the front bumper.

There will always be an option to change to something else, it won't be long before an aero kit appears, and I'm sure you could have a painted slatted grille.

EDIT: Just realised im not the only one, as there is a poll... wooohoo

I like it, but don't love it. I've spent hours looking at the thing though, in the metal and even more in photos/videos, so I could just be being brain washed!

Yes, this syndrome is known as "I married a plain girl but now I think she's pretty".....

same happened with the GP. Most people were dissapointed. But over the months, despite the fact that nothing visually changed on the car, peoples opinion changed to the point that folks who swore they wouldnt buy one are now taking delivery. The look of the GP grew on me over the months, almost to the point of jealousy that i can now not order one....

how strange we are.
