United-Kingdom performance of new vs old S

Does anyone know whether the performance of the new s will be significantly different from the current one ? Currently debating whether to order old or new.

I would say that the performance of the new car will be considerably better. It's only 5bhp up on the old one but with 240Nm of torque from 1600rpm and more on overboost it's going to be much more civilised to drive and quicker from low rpm's. Like a turbodiesel but it'll still rev right round to 7000. I like the character of the supercharger but it feels sluggish at low rpm's. Plus the fuel economy's going to be way better than my MCSC which is costing me a fortune at 27mpg!

I don't think any performance gains, looking at the figures, will be very noticable on the road. It just won't sound as good!

MPG should be better though. You wan't to try owning a Works!!

With that extra torque, the car will be much more easy to drive fast, and should pull really well from low down. However, actual speeds wont vary much. Overtaking will be particularly good even on a standard car, much more like a supercharged car thats been tuned.

The current Cooper S in standard form can be a bit of a slug at certain speeds/gears.

Paul, I think there is a problem with the vehicle widths on one of those threads.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Which is why I always stand by my statement the Works S was what the standard S should have been.

Yep, and the annoying thing is, the 'Works' car could have been the standard car all along, theres nothing particularly clever or expensive about the Works conversion, no reason why it couldnt have come off the production line with 200bhp in the first place.

Following on from that; Is the current works better than the forthcoming standard 's' then generally speaking??

That is untill we see what the tuned version of the Turbo is like; wether it would still be a works or not is another matter.

The new Works under development sounds very promising. As for is the current 210 works "better" then the new S, better in what way? It's faster.

I bet they don't get the same horsepower out of the new turbo one as they did with the GP!

Turbo engines are notoriously more difficult to tune than supercharged ones.

Because John Cooper Works have closed their shop the new one wont be a "Proper Works"? They will have just as much to do with the development of the new car as the current one.
