Finally had a play with a Cooper S with the Sport Button....

Went on the UK launch event for the MINI Cooper and Cooper S this week, I was mostly interested in the Cooper, having spent so much time and given so much coverage to the Cooper S, but this time the Cooper S had the Sport button.

It's good. The change it makes, in throttle response in particular, is pretty surprising. At high speeds the heavier steering is also no ticable, but the main thing was the difference it makes to the accelerator behaviour. Very good. Thing this will be a "press every time I get in" button on my own S.

The Cooper S was about £20k worth (the Cooper was £14k worth, BIG difference!), but the best bit was finally getting to use the Sport Button. Overall once again I was very impressed with the S, the engine was brilliant (again), and once again everyone at the event seemed genuinely impressed with the car, in every respect.

ah, brilliant, kind of answers my post in the other thread

Did the selection of Sports mode also make the engine/exhaust note sound more aggresive?

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

The car is getting rave reviews, so it looks like yet again BMW have got it spot on.

I've read most of the UK press reviews now and whilst they all say things like the car is 'more complete', 'more rounded', '30% better in every way', 'more grown up', 'more refined' and of course slightly bigger, I did catch an undertone of people saying the current S is more engaging in terms of feed back and being 'connected to the road'.

All in all, I can't wait to drive the new car and see if it is worth me even thinking about walking away from my heavily modded S, but I guess I'd like to see what the Works version is like first. (Paul if you ever need a stand-in to do some of those ho-hum, run of the mill press launches, just let me know I ahte to think of you sacrificing so much of your time on our behalf!))

As to if BMW have got it spot on, we'll you can't please all the people all the time, but they seem to have got pretty d@mn close!

For the S in the UK it's standard, but in most markets it is an option.

It's also standard in the Irish Market Paul, but as we piggy back onto the UK spec with a few differences, that's not suprising. We didn't get the opportunity to drive an S with a sport button in Rome, but we did drive both a Laser Blue S with Chilli and Panoramic Glass Roof, and a Chili Cooper with Pepper. Some of the new technology demonstrated to us was incredibly impressive, and the new safety features make me want to have one now :-) Roll on the R56 launch!

All of this means you drove the AT. How were the paddle shifts? How does this AT in the Mini compare to the previous version???

Any word on sport button for the USA? I would assume it would be standard on the cooper S.

Well how did the Cooper drive Paul? You said "I was mostly interested in the Cooper" but then say very little about it. Any chance of a review of how it was if you did get to drive it.

Was it the Silver Cooper with Pepper Pack and if it had the Chav lighting what did you think?
