Offline | Only just got the dealer to confirm its a week 48 build!! They say i can't have the chassis number until it arrives at the dealership, stuff and nonsense if you ask me (which you probably won't) |

Offline | tried that, it wouldn't count for insurance as you need a reg no these days. They said they'd give me a reg no for insurance purposes once it arrives from their allocation of numbers from DVLA |

Offline | Perhaps I am a bit slow but, given that on many cars the VIN is displayed on the windscreen, what is the risk of revealing the last 7 characters of a 17 character chassis number? |

Offline | But even if it showed the full number, I still don't understand the risk it gives rise to. Itis regarded as good for security for it to be displayed on a car. And it often is shown in full on the windscreen these days. |

| Open Door..Step Out..Easy | I think the point trying to be made is that, whilst it is undoubtedly good to have a visible VIN on a car, it is probably less so to broadcast it to everyone on the Internet. Agreed, anyone that wanted to use a registration or chassis number for dishonest purposes could just walk up to a suitable car and copy them down, but it is so much easier for them to get them off here whilst sat at home in the warm! However, the only 'dishonest' thing I can see people doing with a chassis number is, for example, ordering parts for a Cooper S when they drive a One! I agree with rec and Martin F in that posting the last 7 digits of your chassis number on here should not bring any problems, even though anyone with enough experience (I know I can, but I'm a proper anorak!) would be able to use that information to work out the full 17-digits. |
