To be honest the loss of the supercharger is a sad day for me as this is what makes the S so different to anything else in it's class. I just hope the MINI doesn't end up "blending in" with all the other VW's, Peugeot's and Seats out there as a driving experience! !

Totally agree with you R1. Superchargers are normally found in cars that are deemed upmarket sports cars. To have it in a 'Hot hatch' is totally unique and a great loss.

I'm sure it's done by BMW for MPG, as the new 'S' has much better MPG, on paper. Just seems like to me that it joins the rest of the crowd with a Turbo.

I remember when I bought my first S about 4 years ago and an old guy said to me "what's the scoop for in the bonnet"? and I said the supercharger. He looked at me like I was some sort of nutter and said "It's got a supercharger" with a mystified look. It just sounds so much better!!!!

If people ask me what the scoops for Im just going to say its for the warp drive . Or If you park on the drive you could use is as a mail box.

I have to say I noticed a little bit of a whistle from the turbo which I thought was nice, and with the addition a high performance air filter it will have a great sound great .

I had a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo and with a new air filter the sound was just awesome, drank petrol though.

All I ask is that no one adds a dump valve (so RS Turbo)

The first generation S will be a classic (as long as you look after your little beasties!), no doubt about it. The Supercharger and unique characters and quirks will assure that.

Yes, although it's not as raspy/poppy as the '05 onwards MINIs. But the sound is deeper, I much prefer it. I thought the exhaust note on the JCW MINIs (all versions) and pre-facelift MINIs are the best anyway, and now the new car is out I'd rate it between those too. It's deeper and less poppy than the outgoing model, but more rewarding when it burbles away, the facelift S I think sounds a bit raspy and asthmatic compared to earlier cars.

Its awesome, even compared to the outgoing JCW

Have a read of the S speccing thread (the original) my full thoughts are in there mate

I don't think I'll miss the supercharger as much as I thought I would, the new car sounds great, not intrusive, and the whine, well, cars are for driving, not listening to

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

Sorry for not replying sooner Olly - yep, i think performance is on a par with the 210 JCW, as good, close enough that you can't notice the difference

Rakey, I can't believe you said you won't miss the whine

Not after the amount we drunk last night

Even with the facelifted model JCW compared the R56 MCS, the R56 is very much on par, glad you felt so too

A supercharger was nice, but if anything to me, the turbo feels more constant, and has more torque than the supercharger, if anything the the supercharge has lag compared to the R56 Or maybe its that the power actually gets to the road rather than wheel spinning. It just feels so much more than getting emotional over a noise

The only problem I have is knowing which one to drive?

Then either :
a) you drove a different new MINI S to me.

or

b) Your JCW has lost power!

maybe he isn't just sticking his head in the sand and trying to make out that the old JCW is so great

I actually agree with Aiden, and I certainly know how to drive my JCW and it hasn't lost any power, and I gave the R56 some stick. It is on par, and if anything it has more potential to be so much more than the old JCW.

The new S is much quicker than the old S, the "specced up" cars I've driven have been noticeably quicker and more powerful than my "bare naked" 2006 S, which is much quicker than our 2002 S!

Maybe (which wouldn't be good) there's some duffers out there that are not up to scratch in performance terms?!

I would definitely miss it. For me it's part of the whole 'driving a Mini' experience. It's what made it unique, stand out from the competition. To this day I still remember the first day I took my mate out, he works for Jaguar so had driven all their top end cars. He said it normally costs £60,000 to get a car to sound this good. He loved it.

Just had a read, good to hear

I'm having a test drive next weekend so as a current Cooper owner it seems like I might be in for a bit of shock when I stick my boot down

make sure you get to drive the new Cooper first, then go for the MCS, you'll be amazed at how good the Cooper drives, but then how good the MCS sounds and pulls

But the JCW is a great car and so much more than the new one IMO. It's all that extra weight of your convertable that's slowing yours down!!

It's obvious that you guys are ready for a change of car and I'm not as I have only just bought mine.

There's more to a car than just speed also. The whole driving experience for many reasons just didn't feel as special in the new one to me. Close my eyes and I could have been in any hot hatch (and I would have crashed before you add! )

the extra weight has never slowed me down in my convertible, just ask S&M who has a GTT220
