So, the Supercharger Whine Is No More........

...................do you miss it?

Can you live without it?

Its one of the defining characteristics of the R53 S, part of its DNA so to speak.

The R56 has a very efficient turbo engine, lots of torque and power - is it enough to keep us all happy?

Far as I'm concerned, the R56 is a step forward , but the one thing I will certainly miss is the whine

Tell you what though, the 2002 feels dead slow compared to my 2006, which feels slow compared to the new S, so I cant see me using it very much!

Olly, true, what you never had, and all that............

I was impressed by the poke of the S today, it does seem / feel quick, would feel even faster with the whine - so it must be fast if the impression is still filtering through.........

I sat in the new S today, didnt miss the whine and ive lived with it in my parents MCSC, then again I was so interested in the interior even if there was a whine I wouldnt of taken much notice

Tbh though, yes ill miss it. For me it was part of the fun borrowing my parents car, the noise followed by the burbles and pops was all part of the fun Oh and the 170 horses helped too obviously

I think it added a little character as well as the perfromance, few cars have superchargers these days (a few mercs) and they don't make the noise a mini does. It added a sense of occasion to fast driving but could become tiring on the motorway.
Something everyone with and R56 will become used to in the same way as previos model owners have become used to the supercharger.

I'll miss it. Superchargers are something you normally find in Sports cars not family hatchbacks. It was unique.

Just to empasise on that point; The McLaren/Mercedes SLR has a Supercharger......
It's a shame to loose it.

I won't miss the supercharger at all though; I've only left it outside on the drive.....

The whine, burbling and popping is the best thing about my Cooper S convertible. I drove a R56 S today, yes it's better in all respects except one....the NOISE!! Supercharger for me I think.

The title is a bit mis-leading. You can still buy the supercharged S convertible.

I won't miss the whine of the car in motion. What I will will miss is the "powering down" sound the car makes during the 2 seconds immediately after turning the ignition off. Music to my ears.

Wait until you hear the noise the R56' makes when you open the door with the lights on! All I shall say is; 'it's different' Not exactly music to your ears though........more 'anoying ringtone'.....

And after today, the R56 feels dead slow compaired to my JCW S! And I've still got the whine!!

To be honest the loss of the supercharger is a sad day for me as this is what makes the S so different to anything else in it's class. I just hope the MINI doesn't end up "blending in" with all the other VW's, Peugeot's and Seats out there as a driving experience! !

Oh, I don't know, theres one supercharged car I can think of!

YouTube - Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 "Germany" commercial

YouTube - Mustang GT500 Review

In the US this car costs £1000 less than my JCW S did new!!

And it's got that "whine".
