Placed an order for my R56 S about 6 weeks ago for March 1st delivery and spoke to the dealer today about adding an LSD to the spec.
He said he couldn't add this to the spec as it wasn't an available option, so I said ok fair enough can you delay the build until beginning of March when it will be available and I could then take delivery after that.

He said no it doesn't work like that and would have to put in a new order in March and would be at least 3 months after March ie May/June before I could expect to take delivery of a Mini with an LSD in.

This doesn't sound quite right to me and was wondering if anybody could shed any light on this and what other experiences of this are?

Personally I would have thought that the dealer would just delay the build by a few weeks, the Mini could then be built in March and take delivery towards the end of March.......

MINI recently confirmed that LSD will be available from Week 10 build onwards (take a look at this post) so there is no reason at all why your dealer cannot submit an order now for Week 10.

They have already got their March quota allocation, so just need to pick a slot that is due to be built around this time.

It is true, however, that the option itself is not available on their system yet, but again there is nothing stopping them submitting the order and then amending it nearer the time to add LSD.

You won't get your car on 1st March, but you will get what you want!

It looks to me like your dealer has already allocated an earlier build slot (January or February) to your order, and is just unwilling to change it for you. They are right in saying it cannot be 'delayed' (a January car will always be built in January etc) but there is nothing stopping them changing it to someone else's spec and using a later slot for yours.

They're just being unreasonable!

i have read all the posts on here, but couldn't find anything that answered my question

its a well known dealer in blackburn, i'm sure you know them .......... and he was quite adamant that it wasn't possible, oh well another phone call me thinks.
Now thinking it might have been wiser to nip over to blackpool now........... oh well

For no other reason than that is how MINI have fitted it into the production schedule for the UK. It was always earmarked for March 2007 onwards.

The only reason I can think of that will mean them not being able to change your order to a later build slot is if the car has already gone into production; but if you told them from the start that you wanted it for March it's unlikely they will have used a January allocation.

ok, latest update

car should have been built in Feb but I actually requested to change to mid March and when LSD is available to add to the order and should take delivery towards end of March which is what I wanted.
Its funny how if you explain something slightly different you get the result you wanted .......

I don't actually work for MINI any more (finished last Saturday ) otherwise I'd have put a post up letting everyone know.

I suggest you ask your dealer to give you a copy of the VZAR printout they do when they spec a car, showing that it has been added, as this is the spec that gets sent to the factory.

here we go - final update

dealer has been great today I must say. It did take a little persuasion this morning but after explaining what I wanted to happen, he has spoken with the 'area manager' and has postponed build until middle of March. He has updated the spec sheet confirmation or VZAR as you say in dealership talk and has put LSD as an option. Obviously it is not showing on the system but he has manually put it on the spec with price etc. and will amend the order when the system allows him. He emailed the spec sheet over and is printed off now (same as I got when I actually visited the dealership to place the order)

So to conclude, delivery is now confirmed and scheduled for March 30th with LSD.

Great result I feel and many thanks to Scrogg.


P.S. I know you finished last week just hoping that if anybody else had any info they could post as well.

I wonder why the US is able to get the LSD before the UK? Mine is being built right now with LSD.

However, the UK has been motoring for a while in thier spiffy r56s while the US hasn't even seen them yet...

Mine, too.

My suspicion is it was decided by the same committee that chose to allow only automatic Coopers into the US untill March (no manual 6)... while in turn the Euro marked gets ONLY 6-speeds and has to wait 'till March for the autos.
