United-States Krut's R56 - DYNO'd

Hey all, my mates at Helix in Philadelphia wanted some baseline results with an R56 - so I volunteered to drive from DC to Philly (got 41.3 mpg in the process) and we threw my R56 on the dyno.

The results are pretty good and it looks like BMW under-reported the HP numbers. Take the figures for what it's worth. Results posted on NAM. - complete with a Youtube video!

Excellent thanks for postting them up, seems to be the first dyno we've seen of a stock car.

Excuse my complete ignorance here as I know nothing about dyno's or how they report there stats but that seems to suggest 160bhp which is less than the 175 quoted by MINI?

Or am I missing something?

The dyno figures are for horsepower at the wheels not the crank

Yeah, with a modest 12% drivetrain loss I came up with 180.5 Hp. Very nice!

Now those are sexy curves.

In car terms, of course...

I love the torque curve on the new S..... Up, up, and awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

So, bit confused. Is this a good graph or not? I thought that the bhp line should be straighter, and would peak higher than 6k rpm, and the torque 'curve' has a rather ugly roller coaster ride - meaning the car only truley performs well at around 4500 rpm.... and then drops quite markedly from 5200 rpm upwards.....

Is this normal with turbo engines> ? The lines on my supercharged engines' dyno plot were a lot more 'constant' in terms of availabe torque and progrssive power delivery....

The sport button would make very litle difference really as all it does is adjust acceleration in relation to the peddle, it doesn't change the performance so to speak. It changes the revs of the engine in relation to the pedal position, not the power of the engine in relation the revs.

I have limited experience with dyno's (I've only done my car three times) but that is a good chart. Turbo engines (small displacement ones anyway) seem to deliver peak torque sooner and for longer then a N/A or a SC engine which build to a peak. So this is pretty typical.

What's really good about this chart is that peak torque, most likely more the Mini claims apparently, is delivered in full from ~1900 RMP through ~5200 RPM. My experience with my GTI is that it's torque was delivered in more of a curve, which is less exciting. Yes, there is a little wavering, but it's not that signifigant. Large waves would indicate a bad air / fuel ratio.

It would be interesting to see the A/F. I wonder how rich the R56 runs?

Take a look at MINI's published crank HP and lb-ft figures. Krut's dyno pull shows the torque curve is very close to advertised considering the measurements are not SAE corrected to the environmental conditions. The roller coaster ride, as you put it, it hardly dramatic, but what it means is the car has way more torque at lower RPM than the R53. It also means the boost controller of the stock R56 isn't as damped as it could be, but as you can see above 5,000 RPM, the boost is controlled very well and consistently.

Also, like Paul said, the Sport button DOES NOT impact actual power output, only the steering boost level and the throttle pedal actuation curve & sensitivity. The throttle end points are the same, meaning that if you floor it, the engine is floored; it doesn't matter if the sport button is pushed or not. Roland of GTT already proved the sport button makes no impact on acceleration times.
