Italy Air Scoop mistery

Have you already noticed that the last Cooper Ses sold have got a real air scoop over the bonnet?
I have discovered that the air scoop is no more a fake...
Mine is a fake but others are real...
Obviously I've asked for the replacement of the grill with a new one and I'm waiting for the delivery...
But the question is ... WHY?

I get mine from the dealership tomorrow, so I'll confirm then if mine as a real one or a fake one.

What do you mean by fake? The new R56 MCS no longer use the scoops for air intake. They are just there for cosmetics. None of them really "work" in letting air in.

I mean that my air scoop is COMPLETELY closed, while the new one I've seen has got some parts of the grill opened in order to ,I suppose, permit better cooling of the engine and the turbine zone...

I believe All of them are closed, but if you want to open them up then you can. When I was looking at one, it was closed by a piece of fabric, but that can be easily taken off. All new R56 Cooper S don't use that air intake. The new turbo engine has its air intake from another part. They kept the air scoop just for cosmetic reasons.

I thought they had a honeycomb grill inside the scoop - that's what I've seen in photos and the R56 S's that I've looked at

Yes, there is a grill in the scoop but if you open up the bonnet then there is a thick layer of felt/material that is attached to the inside of the scoop. I guess you can take this off, or take the grill off, but that is how it comes standard here in the US. Turbo engine doesn't use this scoop for air intake.

The plastic mesh grill is only held in place by a few plastic screws (i think; didnt really get a great view at the dealership). Easily removable. It has no true function. However, even though it won't aid in cooling the engine all that much, I'll be taking mine off when I get it. Every little bit helps.

Why open up a high pressure rain inlet just above the HT leads and associated electricals?

Engine cooling really isn't such a hit and miss affair. Opening up random holes in the bonnet is just a likely to hinder as help with cooling. One of the problems with radiators is allowing sufficient warm air to escape from the rear of the radiator to allow more cooling air to take its place from the front. Adding additional air pressure behind the radiator isn't going to help, its more likely to allow a way for a small proportion of the cooling air to bypass the radiator altogether.

Tigger.

Surely removing the material and opening the scoop won't make it any more real/functional?

I say leave it on - it's there for aesthetics and it does the job well.

Yep. Some of the most recently delivered cars have sections of the honeycomb insert that are not blocked off whatsoever. I've seen three or four that way as well as some pics on NAM.

i would urge new MCS owners not to mess around with the scoop grill.

Removing the grill would not only allow rain/water to enter the engine bay, as an earlier post has already pointed out, potentially causing harm to the electric, increasing corrosion etc. but also make it susceptable for unscrupulous, adolescent characters to insert all sorts of crap into the engine bay via the scoop hole - imagined what a few crushed tin cans loose in the engine bay would do!!

Plus, for those who cannot fathom why BMW put a non-functional scoop in the new MCS, it is basic marketing and there simply as one product feature to differentiate the model from the range. If there are owners out there who cannot accept a cosmetic-only scoop on their MCS, then they can always retro fit a cooper bonnet!!

I took delivery of my new MCS yesterday evening (WOW what a car, spent all night driving it, lol)

I can confirm that the scoop on mine does have parts where it lets air in, its not completely blanked off. the black honeycombe is still in there but it has sections that are open. I have not removed anything or tampered with it, this is how it came from MINI.

Its not messing with it since my new MCS has a patially open scoop also!

So I dont think its going to let any "killer rain" in, dont for get theres a massive hole beneat the engine so its not exactly watertight to start with

that's the point, it's partially open, only. The holes are not big enough to allow bits of junk to be inserted into the bonnet bay should someone want to. Other forum users are talking about removing the whole black grill inside the scoop -that is a different matter to what you have.

The underside of your car has a protective undertray to protect all the components and deflect water away from the engine and electronics -so were not saying the engine compartment is water-tight, but designed to work in moisture free, dry conditions. You try pouring a glass of water over your spark plugs- see what thay does to your engines performance!

Tiger,

The performance mod you recommended hasn't worked, my cars stalled!

How much water should I have used?
