Service Indicator

I have covered just over 2000 miles since getting the MINI and the service indicator is showing 20000 to go.

So, I make that 22K miles before service - sounds like a lot of miles to me !!!

Are your service interval counters decreasing at all?

My service indicator has also gone up from 19,000 miles to 20,000 miles. Apparently the sensor 'self-adjusts' to reflect how the car is being driven (i.e. if you drive gently, the car will be under less strain and thus require servicing less often). If you have been running the car in, then you probably have been driving gently so it is not surprising the interval has gone up. In any case, I think a first service at around 20,000 miles is ridiculous. For some people this would not happen for 2,3 or more years. Think how dirty things like oil, fluids and filters would have got by then!

I change my oil every 12 months regardless of mileage (using mobil 1), and i only do about 6,000 miles per year. I'm of the opinion that you can't look after your engine too much !
You work hard to pay for your mini, look after her !

I never went by the service indicator to my previous cars (BMW's)....I change oil and filters every 12 months (as I do about 5-7.000 miles/year) and I follow the service indicator only for the major service. Also, even if the oil can last for 20K miles, it is recommended to change it every 12 months (BMW used to say in the manual that regardless of the Service Indicator you should service the car and change oil every 12 months, even if you have done less miles than the ones required for service).

I intend to do the same with the MINI. Change oil & oil filter every 12 months, and the rest whenever the Service Indicator says so.

Yes, mine started at 19,000 and after about 3,400 miles is now showing 20,000. I begin to think it will never need an oil change on TLC!

I shall have the oil changed after 12 months at my own expense anyway. I only do about 6,000 miles a year.

I think the indicator must be reporting the mileage the service will take place at.

In my car it is now saying 21k miles even though I have already covered 2.3k. When I collected it with 10 miles on it it said 19k.

I agree with you KenL. Although my hand book clearly states on pages 49 and 96 that it is the remaining distance to the service, I think this is another mistake.

Yes I know, this has been discussed before on here.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone from MINI would come on here and post answers to these anomalies

I believe the mileage indicator fluctuates according to how hard the car is driven, therefore if driven hard the distance to the next service is reduced accordingly, however if it fluctuating up and down regularly maybe worth having it checked.

Are you ripping it everywhere, or sitting stationary for a lot of the time?

for low mileage users like myself, I would service the car according to the suggest date which shows 12/2008, rather than follow the suggested service mileage on the OBC.

incidently, when i picked up the car, it should 19k, now shows 21k. which perhaps reflects my gentle run-in....i expect this to drop from here on as I plan to 'give her the beans' more often

I must be driving my 'second' mini like a real girl!!!
It now says (1,700 miles on the clock) that my next service is due at 23000 miles. Can it go higher?

Since mid-April when I picked up my '07 S its SI is still reporting 17,000. That's after ten weeks & over US 5,000 miles of 85% hiway motoring.

I'd been wondering about asking The Dealer if this is 'normal' but then found this thread.

So, your service indicator is coming down as you drive and looks like your service will be at 9 + 13 = 22k miles?

I have done 5k miles but the service indicator is sitting at 21k and hasn't moved for a few thousand miles.

I was convinced the miles being displayed were the miles AT service, not the miles TO service. Now, I am really confused

DIY Down, not Up.

The OBC on my first S (9/2002 build) declined as the miles went under its tires, 'till it passed 0... then the negative numbers started.

I'd have to believe BMW hasn't changed their thinking about how the software should work on the R56, unless I read somewhere (like the manual, maybe?) that it's different from the earlier programming in some meaningful way.

The Service Interval Counter will decrement slower driving on the highway than it will driving in stop and go traffic.
