Dark Silver How awesome is the Sport Mode button!!!

Hi all,

Picked up my DS/W MCS on Saturday with Pacific Blue colour line and i absolutely love the car. I had a mini Cooper 52 Reg before and have always prided myself on what a cool, well built car it is and how the interior was way better than most other cars. Somehow mini have beaten this by miles.

after i picked my car up on sat i did the usual and drove it round to show family and friends and then had to head back to mine as i had to finalise the sale of my old Mini cooper with the girl i sold it to coming round to pick it up. As i have quite a tight drive i thought i would park it on the road for her so it was easier for her to drive off etc. Oh my god it was like travelling back to the stone age, the steering was heavy, and the clutch was like trying to push a concrete brick along with your foot. I couldn't believe the difference.

I think after showing everyone my new car I've guaranteed BMW another 6 customers as everyone loved it - so I'm not sure where this dislike from of the R56 compared to the R50 comes from?

When i was driving the car i was thoughtful not to go over 4,500 revs etc (have a few times since though and seen the traction control kick in).

On the sunday i went out for a drive with my friend who picked up his Honda Civic type R the previous Wednesday and were prob out for 6 hours on a convoy. we didn't do any side by side driving (not racing) to compare speeds responses etc but they were both fantastic.

I really like the civic shape and did think the interior was impressive as it had been a long time since i last test drove the MCS, but upon receiving mine I'm firmly back in the MCS Corner!

Anyways back to the subject heading. during the drive on sunday i thought i would turn on the Sport mode to stiffer the steering wheel for driving at high speeds on the motorway and this worked a treat, especially when you come off and drive along A roads.

I then really noticed the difference when you pull away from a stand still with the sport mode on. without it the car is great, but with it its fantastic. its like you're already starting at 3,000 revs and then just keeps giving!

i remember on the test drive the dealer said try putting the sport button on and feel the difference, and to be honest i dint really notice it as the car was already better than my current one. but if you are picking your new MCS up don't reach for the sport button straight away - treat yourself the next day!

I haven't yet experienced the over boost feature / sound as demonstrated on 5th gear but i cant wait!!!

Anyone still debating about getting a MCS - do it, rob your granny if need!!

great review ! mine will arrive in a month time, I test drove it after , actually ordering the car , I still feel that the R53 is tighter in ways of the steering , clutch , the engine seems struggling , ( i like when iam torturing the car) the new just shouts sophiscation -style - quality .... great cars ....

As you speak so highly of the sport button, Telboy, I wonder if the traditional 0 - 60mph time was measured with it on or off for the MCS. if "off" as seems probable, surely with it engaged there's a few fractions of a second carved out of the reading? What do other owners think?

Sport mode has no effect on the speed / acceleration from what Ive read and experienced in my car.

At a tangent, I'm finding much the same with the Sport Button on my new Cooper.

Whilst running in, I don't want to try any serious tests but subjectively (even allowing for what might be a placebo effect ) the acceleration does seem better with the Button on.

I don't understand the claims that the Sport Button doesn't quicken acceleration, it has to. If the throttle response is quicker surely this means the throttle is open wider quicker, and therefore things are happening faster.

I find that overtaking makes the biggest difference, drop from 5th to 3rd about 50mph and nail it, the difference between sport mode and normal is significant. You can't fail to notice the difference.

Driving with and without the sport button on in my s I agree with djtex. I honestly find it really hard to believe that there is no difference in acceleration - it feels so different! (quite sluggish with sport button off but really sharp with it on)

I recall a thread where somebody tested it and found no difference time wise between the two. Perhaps if you floor it for a 0-60 in both it doesn't make any difference, but with any normal driving I'm sure it would improve acceleration times on the move.

There isnt an increase in power with the button on, but the fact that it opens up the throttle quicker I feel has to make some difference, but I suppose foot to the floor in both modes is well just foot to the floor. It certainly feels quicker.
