Offline | I've read about this in other posts and, whilst mine does the same, it only does it for about 5 seconds max after I've turned the engine off (long and short journeys, taking it easy or not taking it so easy ). Everyone elses seems to go on for a lot longer than this ![]() |

![]() Addicted to MINI... | Hate to burst your bubble but my R56 cooper does it too Its not the turbo, just the engine cooling down. Normally happens after slow speed runs, ie around town, where the air flow into the engine is not high enough to keep the engine cool. As far as I understand anyway...there was another post on this a while back... |

Offline | guys, the first 5-10 seconds is the turbocharger turbine slowing down and emptying the air through the blow-off valve. the other sound (lasting 3min plus) is the fan cooling the engine. as the car stops and no longer gets cool air from the front, it has to cool down itself and there's a dedicated fan for doing it. this system exists in nearly all cars, but starts when the air is hot and 5 minutes or so after the engine stops. so usually you dont notice that. its perfectly normal and healthy. cooper users mustnt hear the first sound (as the cooper doesnt have a turbocharger) but second one is common among all of us, coopa drivers. |

Offline | Will have to keep an ear out for the fan then as I don't recall having heard anything other than the initial few seconds of turbo wind down. Then again I don't normally hang around long enough to listen. Cheers for this ![]() |

![]() Minitastic | its seems to be a 2nd gen mini thing as we one 1st gen cooper s and one second gen cooper, never hear a peep from the cooper s other than the superchager (or engine) wind down for a couple of seconds but the 2nd gen cooper is always running that fan when its turned off, I agree can be quite daunting at first. Glad its normal. |

Offline | Actually, it's a recirculating motor to cool the turbo and keep the coolant moving. It sounds like an air leak and can be a bit disconcerting if you don't know what it is. Old skool turbos, and with my now history twin-charged MINI, you let the car idle for a couple of minutes to cool the beast down. Now the little recirculating pump does the job for you. Offline | picard, that sound is the sound of blow-off valve (BOV). I have a post about it under tuning section, you can check it out. That chuffing noise is great imo! Not all turbo cars are equipped with that, BOV's use is to empty the air within turbocharger when you lift your foot off the throttle pedal to increase the life of the turbine. Because whenever you hit the throttle, turbocharger fills with air and starts spinning, and its a bad thing to try to fill it with air when its already full! Thats the use of BOVs. Some users -like me- like to add or change the bov on their cars I strongly suggest that. you can youtube "hks ssq bov" and understand what i mean![]() |
