Mini rolled

I noticed that when I park my 07 Mini Copper S in gear on an incline, the car rolls if I don't put the emergency brake on. The dealer says this is normal for the 6 speed. It seems odd to me. Is this normal?

You should always put the handbrake on as well as leave it in gear. I wouldn't trust just one or the other to hold the car.

yeah, always have a backup in case one fails....I thought, judging from the title, that you had wrecked your Mini. Glad to see otherwise.

It just seems very odd that parking it in gear will not stop it from rolling. So if the emergency brake should fail I know that parking it in gear will definitely not stop it from rolling. I guess that means I am just relying on the emergency brake then. Again, this seems very odd.

My mini rolled in a parking lot. luckily there were no other cars behind it. It rolled up a curb, passed sidewalk and up slight incline. By the looks of the tire marks on the mulch it seems like it just kissed a tree and rolled back down the curb. No scratches.

I think it seems odd that you dont use the handbrake!!! Its not like its a major effort or anything and it gives you ease of mind!

You do have a point there though.

Perhaps someone else would like to answer this.

I do use the hand brake. But I think I must've forgot this one time only.

I read once about a mini that had actually rolled while the handbrake was set.( On this site.) They guessed that the actual brake shrank after it had cooled. Leaving slack in the handbrake cable, the car was out of gear, so off it rolled. Always a good habit to get into, pulling the handbrake and engaging a gear.
Drive it while you got it! Pops

Click and Clack on Car Talk recommend leaving the car not just in gear but in REVERSE. They say that gear is most resistant to rolling, no matter which way you are facing downhill. At least that's my recollection of their advice.

I was told always to park in reverse when leaving a car... got an explaination at time but beats me if I can remember now.

Always remember when I had my Saab 900... to get key out you had to put car in reverse so got into that habbit years ago..

highway code actually states leaving it in gear when parked on an incline as well as using the handbrake

Hi Guys , always use the handbrake plus for inclines put it in first or reverse . The reason for this is both first and rerverse are very low gears. In other words for the car to roll a given distance the engine has to be hauled over compression a greater number of times. In 6th gear it requires less effort for the wheel to rotate than in 1st.
6th gear and no handbrake on an incline is very dangerous. The air will find its way past the rings on the compression stroke and allow the piston to carry on up then down again.
Best Regards Roland GTT

Scotland

Also if on very steep hill angle wheels towards the kerb as if was to move would be stopped with the kerb, also as roland said harder to turn over engine in low gear

On a steep hill, I turn wheels to kerb, apply handbrake and leave it in reverse or first gear. Reverse if pointing downhill, first if pointing up.

Yep...exactly the same happened with me...guess what? I always leave it in gear now and almost break my arm putting the handbrake on as high as I physically can. This was an R50 though.
