Harsh Engine

My new R56MCS is now 2 weeks old, and I am starting to use all the revs available.

In the first week, I was really impressed with how smooth and clean the engine felt throughout the rev range I was using.

However, now I am using the top of the rev range( 5000rpm upwards), I am slightly disappointed with how harsh the engine feels. For want of a better word, it is very 'buzzy' up there, with quite a lot of vibration going on.

Do they smoothen out with age? (is this a by product of a tight new engine?)

Or are they all like this?

How many miles have you done now? Have you finished running the engine in yet?

Very interested in the replies to this, as i had always thought the whole 'running in' theory was a thing of the past, and it was better to take the car through all of the revs?

You should not exceed 4,500 RPM or 100 mph, or use full throttle until the car's done 1200 miles. After that you can gradually increase the RPM.

I've stuck to that and done 2K miles, and it runs very smoothly. It would appear that you have not done this !!

To my understanding also the theory of running in an engine is mostly something of the best.

All car manufacturers pre run the engine in at the factory. So as such the engine is already run in.

However, the brakes arent, the gearbox is a bit tight etc.. etc..

It is very much opinion. Some people stick to the manufacturers word. Others (including me) believe itis a figure given for financial reasons. If you can keep all your new cars driven calmly for the first 1200 miles you will make savings. Running in has been around for ages,so why not. It also alows the new owner to get used to the new car gradually at slower speeds. A marketing thing! (note dealer courtesy cars never get properly run in, or hire cars, and more to the point dealer demonstrators - do these all fail early in life?)

Has anyone on here ever spoken to a qualified mechnic who does believe in running in as per user manual?

The dealer told me not to bother, but I still kept it calm for the first thousand.I drove it at reasonable speed, but not like I stole it! :-)

As to your question, it has 1400 miles on it.

So going over 4500 rpm in the first 1200 miles ruins the engine? Damn!
