Thumbs up The Great MPG Challenge - Are you strong enough?

The Challenge is to fill your tank with petrol all 50 litres... then drive.... The person who can record the highest amount of miles from a single tank wins!

Rules:
1. Honesty is the best policy, if possible a picture of the miles driven (taken from the display)
2. No cheating.. one tank only

Points
A point is given for each mile over 350 and a point deducted for every mile under.

record your score on this thread

i.e.

N44THY 300Miles -50points

If your plan is to not take the engine above 3000 revs or to allow your car to fully heat up before driving or whatever you decide to do, the task is simple... as many miles as possible for one tank.

REMEMBER to reset your trip computer at the petrol station.

When im back at work id like to join this, I want to aim for over 500 miles per tank, Ive had 500 with the old engine, just had a replacement engine so one its bedded in ill be up for the competition.

Is this using the upgraded unleaded or standard unleaded? As i find on the M/Way the upgraded stuff lasts about an extra 20 miles more per tank.

Another question is for the extra 20 miles you gain out of one tank of super unleaded, does it stack up againt the extra £3 to fill up?

Regarding Super Unleaded versus Normal - prior to getting an MCS I had an 04 Civic Type-R.

If I used Super Unleaded then the cost per mile was always less despite the price differential, and the engine performed better !

My MCS has run on Tesco 99 from new, so I cannot comment on how it would be on a lower RON fuel, but it's averaged 35.7 over 4K miles compared with 25 mpg with the Type-R over the time I owned it.

I guess if you're filling your car with the super super super unleaded you want to be feeling the extra performance gains?

Very true and a definite improvement with the Type-R, the engine was more responsive, and smoother.

When changing to a higher RON petrol it takes a while to notice an improvement until the ECU re-maps itself. 5th Gear did a survey on this and a high RON fuel is only beneficial to high performance engines. A standard Mini would not benefit, the Cooper slightly but the MCS certainly would.

But who would let their tank run dry?
I wouldn't let it go down below Quarter of a tank!

Absolutely. Rather than take the full tank challenge, I'll extrapolate from my regular average. I'm getting ~40mpg every work week (30ish at weekends, 45+ in the week), which I think equates to about 440 miles from a full tank which matches pretty well with the trip computer's guesstimates. No special driving techniques involved. < 80mph at all times, cruise control on dual carriageways and dull A-roads. Set off to work at 6:30 am to avoid traffic

Are you measuring to the petrol light coming on? I've not had the car long, but had the light come on at the last two lights (which went red). What happens when it goes to a single light?

David

(need to know, off on a 600mile trip to scotland )

Ok i guess we should be sensible about this! i'm not saying run your tank dry! thats just silly! i dont think anyone would do that anyway... i guess once the light comes on and like you would do normally...i.e. drive to the nearest petrol station that would be the miles per tank figure.

According to the Handbook the MCS tank capacity is: -

Approx. 50 Litres (11.0 gal) including approx. 4.5 Litres (1.8 gal) in reserve.

Don't want to spoil the competition but the above tank capacity should be taken into account !!

Might be worthwhile to have a can of fuel in the boot just in case.

Your taking the pi55, so far in 3 months of ownership i have averaged 23.9mpg. I have no idea what 300miles to a tank looks like.

Am I allowed to compete in a Supercharged R53 MCS?

I haven't done exactly as you asked, but here's the tank range immediately after I filled up after doing my first 100 miles in the S:

My tank got low the other day - the estimated range was only 4 miles when I got to the petrol station. The last couple of miles nearly gave me a heart attack as it started counting down 1 mile every 20 seconds or so!

I'd only just picked her up, brand new! it was around the first 100 miles, kept under 3000rpm and cruised on the dual carriageways and A roads at around 50-60mph. Never taken over 60! It looked like I was going to get over 42mpg on average, but eventually settled for a knat's earlobe under 40mpg

I've never managed it since, strangely enough!

Tigger.
