Italy Lost the exhaust pop

Unfortunately someone went into the back of my Cooper S - severely denting the rear bumper - while the exhaust does not seem to be damaged, the car no longer makes the charactoristic 'popping' noise when I take my foot off the accelarator quickly at high revs. Does anyone know how this sound is produced - and if it can be fixed easily? I thought for the US model Copper S MINI got rid of the noise - so assume it is something relatively small and cosmetic? Grateful for any tips.

usually the "popping" noise produced by any car after letting off the accelerator is created by small amounts of unburned fuel being dumped into the exhaust headers and burned off within the exhaust system of the car. This results in the "popping" noise or "back-fire" that you're hearing... This can be louder or softer, or none existent on different cars depending on the muffler used etc...

Don't know why a bump in the rear would have stopped that though...

Can't help sorry, but according to motoringfile.com stories when the car was launched the US cars have a different ECU tune to remove the pop.

I normally tend to get the "exhaust pop" in Sport Mode. Have you tried turning that on and seeing what happens? The extra throttle response will probably throw more fuel around the engine.

If you gently tap the accelerator this may make a burbling sound as fuel is going into the pistons, not being burned and then going through the exhaust chambers manking the popping sound. I have a big-bore, rally style back box on my MC and whn i do this it makes a really sexy popping sound
