I personally know of 2 people who have had to have the whole thing replaced - Exactly the same circumstance as CAR, and at 9k miles and 16k miles. And I think a MINI2 member popey had his changed under precaution, but same symtoms again, so if it wasn't replaced, I believe it would have gone completely.

I was probably flippant with the word 'common', but it certainly isn't an isolated case.

who said there's no such thing as bad publicity

probs with cold starting, noises from the S engine / gearbox, were the main reason I went for the Cooper (non S)

am thinking Pug must've been leading 'joint' development of the 175 thp S / Gti engine

Hello!

Mine also broke and been replaced at approx. 18000 km. Same fault - whine at moderate load...

Can you guys be more especific on what you mean by "whine"!?!?!?!?

You're starting to worry me!
On a few acasions I've heard my car make a noise (that can be defined as a whine) when in 2nd gear and under load... If I hadn't read about this I'd say there's nothing wrong but now you've got me thinking!!! A LOT!!!

And it just has 10 000 Km!?!?!?!?

Please bring a bit more light to the subject!
