Essential Options for a Cooper

I have been looking at the option list and wondering what are the essential options for MINI future resale values. I didn't opt for air con on my current MINI and that as now a must

Here is my list:-

Either Pepper or chilli pack
Hi Fi speaker system
Sports Seats
Sports button
either ASC+T or DSC
rear spoiler
sports suspension

PJ

Was MK1 Black MINI ONE (Sept 2001 Build)
NOW NEW MX-5

I'd say its Air Con (whether it be manual or auto)

Also if it were a ONE, i'd say Alloy Wheels (even if they are only 15"s)

If it's resale you're considering then aircon I guess (my last S didn't have it, never regretted the choice myself). Also I'd personally make sure I didn't get the standard black pimply trim for the door elipses, as they feel really cheap to me.

I had a problem as to what options to order (both for me & for resale) so I opted for almost everyhting! I think essential are:

- Chili Pack
- A/C (in Greece the manual is standard)
- ASC (or DSC for the S)
- Sport Seats
- 3-Spoke Wheel (even better with MFSW)
- Some sort of customised interior (either the dash trim or colour lines or both)
- CD Boost which supports MP3 (I think it is stupid for car manufacturers to offer CD player that do not support MP3....but I guess they want to get more money from us).
- Xenon Lights
- Board Computer
- Light Pack
- Alarm

For resale, i.e best percentage return, I would say that getting as few options as possible is the way to go.

From your list I would say HiFI system, sports seats, sports button (a normal Cooper is sharp enough ), rear spoiler and sports suspension (especially this) are NOT essential.

Paul is right about picking a trim option. Standard looks poor, get something like fluid silver.

What is your budget?

Red/Black R56 Cooper Stripes, CHILLI, ASC+T, MINI HiFi, Piano Black Dash, Red Colour Line, Heated Mirrors/Jets, Spare Wheel, Smoker Pack!
Mods - Cooper S pedals, Cheqered interior mirror, chrome side repeaters

The famous Glass's Guide, that all dealers blame for part-exchange values, puts the MINI Cooper into three categories:

Cooper
Cooper Pepper
Cooper Chili

All values assume each car has metallic paint and air conditioning.

Any other option makes the car more desirable, but will have little, if any, positive effect on future value if you look to part-exchange. Obviously if you are looking to sell privately the more options you have the more desirable the car will be, and the more (within reason) you can ask for it.

Basically, none of the items on your list will make the car worth more come resale time.

Am looking to spend around £15K.

Maybe the sport suspension is not an essential

Nope. If you're main concern is resale keep the spec low, but aircon is probably essential. Chili a good idea.

If you can test a car with and without. I tested one with SS and 17" wheels and one with normal suspension and 16" wheels. I much preferred the ride of the latter. I was coming from a Golf though and was used to decent ride quality.

£15k is enough to get a nice MINI. If you don't want the part leather seats, go for PEPPER but upgrade to sports seats. You can pick up bigger wheels later from here or Ebay if you want them.

My car (spec below) was ~£15750 including TLC.

Options

Having had my Cooper just under a month ...here are the results of the Pennine jury.

Bi-Xenons fabulous on the country roads - crisp clear self adjusting. Best piece of kit.
MFSW very good
Heated windscreen (Not for Greece ) fantastic.

Auto air-con worth the extra on top of the Chilli pack.

Ride on 16" motorway and POOR town roads excellent. Not knocking the larger wheels they look great but not as smooth, based upon runs in other cars, if thats what you like.

Things I wish i had ...the hi-fi upgrade. Possibly the sun roof.

Take it or leave it the upholstery, very personal, interior trims love mine (Chili Pack Rooster red Fluid Silver... but again personal. Down to budget.

Remember over spec is as bad as under spec on resale values . Getting it right is difficult .

Air con is a good idea, better than a sun roof . Chilli pack also a good idea for maximum

return .

Check out the official mini site and do some homework check the specs and pices of the

cherished minis and decide which options are value for money and which have not

enhanced the resale price .

Changing the bulbs to decent quality ones such as Osram SilverStars shuold improve them. Only about £15 a pair.

If you don't order a dash option, piano black or fluid silver etc, your door elipses are the standard black plastic and look naff, even if you get the part leather, so beware!

^^^^ That's what was talking about. I feel it really lets the interior down if it's the standard black plastic.

As others have pointed out, the only really essential option for resale in the UK is aircon of some form. Getting one of the packs is probably the best way to do this; from R50 experience, most Coopers have the Chili pack, but going for Pepper shouldn't have too much effect on resale.

One factor that hasn't been mentioned as yet is colour choice. I would suspect that some colours, like Chili Red and Astro Black, are pretty safe bets for resale. My dealer also thinks that my choice of Lightning Blue/White is also not going to harm its future value. I would beware of Mellow Yellow, and also suspect that Nightfire Red will go the same way as Velvet Red.

No No Colours

Our dealer said Yellow & Nightfire Red were colours to avoid.

As to options that are a must I would agree with air-con & solve this by adding Chilli Pack, ASC-T, dipping rear view mirror and one option I wish we had added Xenon Lights (I have these on the 5er with adaptive headlights)
