I believe we will agree to disagree over stop/start, time will tell. Now to the emissions of (CO2) stop/start will prevent. Since the small rise in CO2 over the century plant growth has increased by upwards of 40% due to this increase, CO2 is a fertiliser, this is the reason we have enjoyed an abundance of cheap food and been able to feed the third world.
Unfortunately man made CO2 which forms less that 0.01% of the earth`s atmosphere has been blamed for the slight rise in the earth`s temperature, the rise is most likely due to that immense star called the SUN, its already warmed MARS. To get back to emissions, to counter this CO2 rise the greens have pushed bio-fuel, upps, it now appears the South Americans are cutting down the rain forests like no tomorrow to grow the stuff, and the north Americans have stopped growing wheat to do likewise, upps no food, no rain forests, dead Africans but plenty of bio-fuel.
Saving fuel is good but trying to reduce CO2 which is beneficial to all mankind is bad.

Ok but if CO2 is sooo good why is it poisonous to humans and other animals? Plus mars is not warmed its cold and dead on the surface which might suit you down to the ground, NASA will be going there soon so do us all a favour and go and book yourself a place on the flight.

I have the start stop system and it works great and saves me fuel/money but as for the man made climate change debate I'm not convinced. Bearing in mind that over millions of years the planet has heated and cooled wihout the help of man, why do we think we have the right to try and keep the temperature constant?
It wasn't that long ago the 'experts' were predicting a global cooling...if that did happen would we have to pump out more pollution to warm things up a bit?
It's like architecture, quite often you won't get planning permission unless your house fits in with the other houses in it's environment. But the houses that dictate the way it should look were presumably modern when they were built, why does it all have to stay the same. I fear there will be a big chunk of history left where nothing happened and nothing changed. Does nobody want things to move on or change...he says driving the third generation of a 50 year old car

Recycling is completely different as is the need to find alternative fuels but while the recycling issue is being tackled the alternative fuels search doesn't seem to be advancing very quickly. Considering that we are constantly told that fossil fuels will run out in x amount of years surely this is of great importance.
Ultimately I think the 'man made global Warming' position is financially motivated. If the worlds governments can keep people in fear then it is far easier to make evey new tax a 'green tax' and people will pay. Tax ,Tax, Tax...thats what it's all about.

Just my opinion, and I know it's not very popular to suggest that there are two sides but there you go.

I'm not sure why to be honest

The auto start/stop function does exactly what it says on the tin - automatically cuts the engine while stationary - thus improving your fuel economy and reducing Co2 emissions. It should be standard issue on all city cars like the Smart etc

I agree fully - it is a realy smart piece of functionality which works well, just takes some getting used to.

However on this thread it seems that some people want to drag it into a wider climate debate.

If a climate debate is required then a new thread should be started in the off topic forums.

Just to raise this topic again. I cannot use it on my car as it has been converted to LPG. Once the engine stops, it starts again on unleaded. Leaving it ticking over at traffic lights on LPG causes less harm

Only problem is, I have to remember to manually switch it off everytime I start the car!!!!!

I have now driven 800km and I haven't noticed the thing work even once.

I did stall the engine to lights once and the engine started itself immediately I pressed the clutch. Is this part of the start/stop system or part of the push operated ignition/something else?
I has been below zero all time from delivery <- reason for not seen it working?

Dot know what the problem is for mini to use the new stats CO2 etc... they have to have it on and the driver must disable it.

Otherwise we would all be paying mega tax and higher fuel bills, its seems so logical to me I don't see what the problem is just dont lift your foot of the clutch in neutral.....

Whats the big deal....it saves us money can't see what some of you have a problem with its a pointless arguament.

i think the stop start is great, i have it on my cooper d and i only use it if i think i'm going to be stationary for more than a minute., as long as the clutch pedal is pressed, it will not cut the engine, couldn't be easier.

The fact that you can't spell bye bye says it all.

If you can't see that stop start technology is there to save fuel then I think you should sell the mini and buy another SLK, or perhaps upgrade your SLK to an AMG model and go for broke eh?

The simple facts are as follows:-

Oil is a finite fuel source
The developing world is now starting to overtake the developed world in terms of fuel consumption.
Fuel prices are increasing

The mini is one of the lowest polluting cars on the market
It is made from conventional parts which have known recycling methods (I dont think Toyota have a full end of life management scheme for the Prius yet)
It has a range of technologies which are used to save fuel without the intervention of the driver.

And blow me, when I'm bimbling around in my Dooper with my ipod turned up (not that loud) I cant even hear the engine anyway. The engine is always ready to go, even if I'm sat at the front of the queue at the lights and want to make a brisk getaway, I'll always be moving before the lights have gone full green anyway?

Which aspect is troubling you?
