It's too bad the north american cars do not have this feature. I would have liked it on my 08 clubman for sure!

I found it a bit disconcerting at first when i tried one yesterday, but once you get used to it its good in wierd way. Wonder what effect it'll have on starter motors after a few years?

They're beefed up to suit the system.

Stop Start got on my nerves during my driving lessons and test - When we had to pull up and stop, my examinor thought I'd stalled it!! I then had to explain the system to him - Don't think he was best pleased but I think he understood in the end!

Hmm, you would think instructors would disable it to avoid confusing learners.

Thats the odd thing - it was very tempramental - It switched off when it wanted to whether the system was activated or not. I pulled up 7/10 times and it wouldn't shut off even with the switch on Most comical thing to look back on - Not so at the time - Very annoying

Certain factors have to be right for the system to work - car must be up to operating temperature (i.e. won't usually work in the first 15 mins of a journey), and it won't work if there's a high current load at the time (i.e. if you're running xenons, and the stereo, and the heated screen, aircon, heated seats etc)....

Basically, the car will switch itself off when its up to temperature, and able to sustain all the systems you currently have running from the battery, and still have enough power in reserve to re-start when you depress the clutch

That's very clever Jon. Common sense when you think about it.

Yup

Turning a starter motor and firing up an engine actually requires a huge amount of power - this is more than made up in the new MINI by the energy regeneration system which charges the battery through the brakes (a bit like a dynamo on a bike).

BMW call the system 'efficient dynamics' - it basically utilises the power harnessed through the brakes to re-fuel the system quickly, to enable it to switch off the engine while the vehicle is stationary. Very clever really, harnessing power that's already there, to switch off power when its not needed.

Just picked me new S up and thought it was bust, every time I stopped at the lights it stalled, got home and rang the dealer up and complained. It was only then, when he explained did I realise what stop/start was. I'll give it a try, but when in traffic and it stops it is a little un-nerving. If we get snow or cold weather I will be very worried if the little *** doesn't start!

Don't worry; that'll never happen as the Stop/Start gets inactivated at low temperatures. (Then you just worry why the d.... thing's stopped working!)

So that's what 'Efficient Dynamic's is.

Is it on all R56's or after a certain build date?
