You can't get a better earth than that. At least it would serve to eliminate a bad earth as a cause.

Try your friendly neighbourhood car shop. Go there with your headunit ready to remove and ask them if you could try another set of RCA's to diagnose the problem. Its not like you'd have to route them under the carpet or anything, just go across the seats from front to back. I know i'd only be too happy to try that for one of my customers.
