Face-lift cars from sometime in the first quarter of 05 were able to be spec'd with the LSD option (£100 bargain).

04 plate is pre - face-lift I believe, 54 plate should be post face-lift (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

£10,000 inc the engine mod?
Sorry but you are dreaming - 05 to 56 plate cars are still fetching somewhere between £14k - £17k depending on the spec and mileage.

I would forget about the mods, save a bit more money and get the best post-facelift car you can.
A totally stock S with good options is a great car.........bottom line.
If you are planning on keeping this car for a long time then don't rush - spend your money wisely and enjoy the car for years to come without throwing money down the toilet to repair an older car that has led a hard life.

I don't want to diss the guy who bought an S and then paid for a full respray but that is simply ridiculous on a 5 year old (or less) car, I had a 12 year old Mercedes Benz with totally original paint, 96k on the clock and it was stunning - if a car needs a respray at such a young age who knows how badly it's been abused in other areas.

Cheers, Geoff.

When I said £10k including engine mod, I wasn't referring to a post face lift car, I was considering a reasonably priced'02-'03 car, plus a GTT 220bhp at £1k. I had budgeted for £8-9k for a car. `there are many good examples available in autotrader. Yes its nice to have all the mod cons, but I'm not too concerned with having a fully specced car. Some mod cons would be nice though.

I was looking for a Lotus Elise recently and £14-£16k was my budget. But due to losing my no claims, insurance was extortionate. So had to resort to plan b, which was to also own a Cooper S. The Lotus will have to wait.

You have got me thinking about the post face lift car. What you are saying makes total sense to me, but it is about budget in the end.

Will carry on looking, I'm sure Ive come across cars at £12k, but didn't take much notice due to the price, as I was looking at cars up to £10.5k with a view to negotiate, which will get me an '04 plate.

How much difference does the LSD make on the Cooper. I had an E36 M3 Evo with it on, but obviously a different beast being RWD?
