See some of the statements below. We can assume you love cars and driving, so what would you do if you got banned and weren't allowed to drive? Is it worth it? Stick to a Cooper for a couple of years. They're a better drivers car anyway

Should I insure in my parents name?

Many people try to avoid higher premiums by insuring a car in a parents name and adding a younger driver.

Technically this is called "fronting" and it is to be avoided. In the worst case, should you do this, a claim could be called invalid meaning that you would not receive a payout and the younger driver could be convicted of driving without insurance.

As a minimum the fine would be severe and 6 points is generally the basic penalty. For young drivers this could potentially mean the loss of their license.

A vehicle being used for commuting by a student could be the evidence an insurance company would need to invalidate the policy for fronting.

The safest course of action is to insure in the young drivers name. This carries the extra benefit of them being able to accumulate their No Claims Bonus.

What are the consequences of driving without insurance?

If you drive without insurance you will get an IN10 conviction. The standard minimum punishment for this is 6 points and a £180 fine.

However this can be increased to more severe measures including driving bans.

Driving without insurance is a serious conviction and will have an effect on your insurance premiums. For a young driver this will mean a vast increase in premium and often will result in insurers refusing cover.

With the new legislation regarding new drivers, an IN10 conviction may incur a ban and a forced retake of the driving test.
