ok, im in a similar position to you. putting your mum's name on the v5 makes no difference to insurance - its who actually owns the car - my mum's name is on the v5 registration document of my cooper S.
however, I'm insured in my own name with both my parents as named drivers - hence, i am the main driver.
got the S when i had just turned 18, with 0 ncb - £2900. that's after moving up from a cooper - they're great cars, but nothing on the S.
