Both is the short answer.

First of all it is easier to fit the car seat 100% correctly, it is VERY hard to be 100% confident you've done this using a belt system.

Also, as it is physically attached to the car, it is (so I've read/been advised) more solidly and securely attached.

Personally, I find it a very reassuring thing to have.
