I get 400 miles per tank under the same scenario as you describe and would expect 450+ on a long journey.
The D isn't a boy-racer's tool but the mid-range torque means overtaking is a breeze - in 3rd from low speeds and 4th up to the legal limit if you're in a hurry. (Otherwise 5th and 6th are all you need.)
