Stebro on a MINI Cooper Stebro recently (February 2003) asked the Ottawa Mini Club if anyone was interested in prototyping their new performances exhaust system for the MINI Cooper (the S version is available now too) I was not that interested at first. Then I found out that Stebro was located a few miles from where I live……. And what the heck, a throaty exhaust, and squeezing hps out of the car is what life is all about if you own a MINI.
The first visit to Stebro was for measuring and planning the installation. The following week the initial fitting and testing took place. Some adjustments were made to tune the sound of the system and to ensure that there was no sound resonance points inside the car.
I have had the exhaust installed for a couple of months now and I would recommend it. I find it adds more fun to the car in terms of sound and performance. The system sounds very nice; a deep throaty growl upon start-up and a low rumble on tick over. Moderate to hard accelerating from start produces a refined tight deep base sound – hard to describe and I do not have a tape recorder! Gentle acceleration or just motoring along, at say 60, 80, 100 kph, produces little exhaust noise, however, dropping down a gear and the system’s deep tone can be heard again. Performance, I did not dyno the car before or after, but my expectations were around 8-10 hp. Well from “seat of the pants perspective“ the car is definitely more responsive over the range, especially the top end. I was thinking about moving up to an S at sometime but the new exhaust has satisfied my appetite – for now. I have no other modifications on the car. |
