I think my clutch needs doing on my 2005 Mini one. It is making all kinds of cranking and clicking noises. I have been quoted £430 inc VAT parts and labour, Does that sound about right??? If anyone know how to do it do they want to earn £150?? haha.
Just be careful with them. They replaced the clutch on my mini but while doing it they rang to say they had noticed something else needed replacing and it ended up costing me double what they originally quoted.
Not saying all garages are the same but I do feel they ripped us off and gave a cheap quote just to get the business.
If something sounds too good to be true it probably is!
Just had my wifes cooper done at a BMW specialist in Salisbury that I have used for years. They charged £480inc. which was very good. Expensive job as the work involved is nuts.
BMW will want £1000 plus. My local dealer is cheap compared to most as well!
I know here in Aus I charge $800 to fit and a OME clutch for $400 (Delaers charge $1850!!!), Doing it is not to bad but as has been said you have to get fairly deep into the heart of your mini. Next one I do I will have to do a walk through with pics.
That would be great. I have found the OEM valeo clutch used in the MINI for £100 delivered so i am going to go for that and hopefully i wont regret it!!! eeeekk
You may not have a choice on the flywheel, If its scored or has hot spots it will need to be machined or replaced. Im not sure what your mini is but I have a valeo Single mass kit on my R53 and it works fine and has a nice light clutch. Depending on the miles, if you have the flywheel off, you may as well replace the rear main seal (not hard to do) and the input shaft seal to the gearbox (again not hard to do). Don't forget to replace the input shaft guide sleeve at the same time and look on Youtube for Modmini as he covers clutch changes on both the R50 and R53. Expect a weekend taking your time for the 1st time you do it, second time shouldn't take more than 7 hours on your own. One thing to consider is, they may have used torx bolts (common on euro cars) on the pressure plate, make sure you have torx sockets on hand as hex sockets will only mess the bolt heads up.
Also, look up tech docs on Pelican Parts website as they cover clutch changes.
If you choose to do your own repair, in the Modmini video, he uses an overhead engine support bar, I use the same and its a godsend as it leaves the underside clear and your not dependant on a trolley jack to support the engine.
As UtilityGuy mentioned John Tee is a good option in the UK, I also found him helpful with questions from Australia in regards to my R50's midland gearbox.
Aussie 11 has fitter a clutch himself - have a search for his thread on how his went, may be able to help you or do it for you perhaps (for the right price im sure lol)
