Steering thud

Almost 3 years old Cooper S. Parked up at a supermarket, did some shopping and reversed into a lamp post - or so I thought. There was a distinct thud as I reversed and turned (right) and I was convinced I'd hit a nearby lamp post. Even some passers by looked over at the noise. Had a look and no damage at all. Relief but confused. Next day all seems well until I'm reversing again and more noise - I thought it might be the wheel arch lining had detached and was getting caught but I've jacked the car up and all looks well. What I've noticed is that the steering wheel is out of alignment. So it's going in for a Service/MOT check-over but interested in any ideas....?

Thanks
Dave
