Got 2003 MCS with 17% pulley and Exhaust
The other day it snapped the fan belt the garage says it needs a new supercharger the only noise I had before the belt snapped was clutch
To be fair the car has never felt quick always done its job and been a good drive
But never how others describe there cars
Does it sound reasonable for the supercharger to let go like that it's done 85000 miles
Any recommended rebuilders or is it a new unit
Thanks

Has the belt snapped because the supercharger is seized?

Surprised it has failed at this mileage without some warning.

What sort of garage have you taken it to (BMW dealer or independant)?

You do see second hand superchargers on ebay from breakers for about £400 - £500 pounds. Not sure I'd want to chance it with one of these without a rebuild/oil change first.

Others will know best independants to go to for supply/rebuild of your supercharger, but would have thought a conversation with any of the well known specialists will quickly get you the info you need to make a decision.

Good luck!

So, do you think the belt snapped because the s-charger is now tight to turn?

I'm afraid I don't know how hard/easy it is to turn a good supercharger by hand......I'm sure someone else on this forum will be able to offer a view about that.

At the end of the day, unless your friend (mechanic) is a MINI specialist, I would have thought the best thing would be to talk to a specialist who is reasonably close to where you live, and then if you have removed the supercharger from your engine consider taking it to them for examination.

I'm sure I have heard of people rebuilding their superchargers as well as changing/topping-up the oil in them.

Did you install (or have installed) the pulley yourself? If you know who did the pulley it might be worth talking to them.

Hi ya

Just a bit of info for you :)

Some pulleys come loose or move on the sc shaft some are machined badly and bind on the snout casing causing them to heat up and jam and break the belt.
Also the sc pulley might feel tight if the belt has broken the tensioner may be rubbing against it, unless the tensioner has been locked in to its maintenance position to change the belt it would be hard to tell

if he can come back with the pulley make might be able to help it's always worth checking the gap between the pulley and the casing.
I have seen this a few times now, hopefully he's not trashed the tensioner or crank pulley etc

Always invest in a tensioner stop money well spent :)
