I've just come through the 1250 mile run-in period as well with my new Cooper, and my first 3 fill-ups were:

347 miles - 42 litres to fill up
385 miles - 45 litres to fill up
389 miles - 45 litres to fill up

That works out at about 37-39 mpg during the run-in.

First fill up after starting to have some post-1250 mile fun was 377 miles and 47 litres to fill up, which is about 36 mpg. I can see the mpg dropping quite a bit very shortly. Over 4,500 rpm is addictive!
