Installation Manual
Three of the most important points of installation are as follows:
  • Mount the CD computer unit so that the CD rotates in a perfectly horizontal plain!
  • Make sure the satellite aerial can see the sky!
  • Do not interrupt the power supply when a programming CD is loading! (Used when updating the software)
Lets go!
  • Contents
On receipt of your system, check all the contents are correct.
  • Correct polarity
VDO Dayton kits will only operate on 12v systems with negative earth (negative to body)
  • Disconnect battery
Before starting installation disconnect both the vehicles battery cables after observing other manufactures safety instructions regarding alarm system, airbags, immobiliser and anti theft radio coding.
  • Mount the Navigation CD computer
The computer must be installed as horizontal as possible.

Allow at least 50mm of space in front of the CD slot to be able to insert the CD disk

Allow 50mm of space behind the computer to allow for connection plugs and the fan cooler to work correctly

The most suitable location is in the fixed ceiling area of the boot. Other locations are possible including under the front or rear seats

The computer must not be subjected to dampness, high humidity or areas of extreme temperature or shock.

The computer is usually held by the supplied adjustable mounting brackets. When drilling please be aware of the location of the fuel tank, pipes, load bearing structures and electrical wiring!
  • Mount the GPS aerial
The GPS aerial is usually mounted inside the vehicle, so that it can see the sky. Favorite spots are under the felt of the rear window, or under the plastic part of the front window shelf. The GPS aerial will pick up signals through glass and plastic, but will not 'see the sky' through metal or other conductive surfaces. In vehicles with metallic windows it is possible to mount the GPS aerial outside, inside one of the plastic bumpers, or on the boot lid near the rear screen. make sure that the distance to window frame supports, door supports and other metallic objects is at least 10cm.
  • Install the monitor
The position of the monitor will vary from vehicle to vehicle. By holding the monitor in various positions a good compromise of aesthetics and practicality can usually be found. Bear in mind the MS 3000 can be mounted upside down. i.e. suspended from the roof, and has software that will turn the picture through 180°. Both the MS 4000 and MS 6000 will usually be mounted in a standard DIN (radio) slot in the normal car radio position. The mounting brackets supplied are very adaptable, but 'swan necks' and other mounting accessories are available as extras.
  • Powered infra red remote control holder
Before installing the powered holder, decide wether you are going to use it or not. It will give you a place to 'store' the remote, and it will illuminate the remote at night, (the remote illuminates when a button is pushed when out of the holder anyway). The downside is that it is another thing to wire up, and yet more clutter on your dashboard! A universal mounting bracket is supplied if you must!
  • Tapping the speedometer signal (The pulse generator)
On your order form is a place for you to tell us what kind of vehicle you will be installing your VDO Dayton navigation system to. This is so we can enclose the correct data sheet for your vehicle regarding the pulse generator feed. Most modern vehicles will have a pulse generator, which operates the speedo. Many cars are supplied with the speedo pulse signal on one of the car radio connectors. If not sure please also contact your car dealer. We do not recommend you purchase a VDO Dayton system if your vehicle does not have a pulse generator. Pulse generators are available for most vehicles from the vehicle manufacturer as they are needed for cruise controls and on-board computers and we would recommend that the main dealer fits one in the rare instance that your vehicle does not have one.
  • Mount the loudspeaker
MS 3000 and MS 5000 only, usually fitted high up in the passenger side foot well
  • Laying the wiring loom
  1. try to 'bury' all wiring
  2. avoid abrasive corners and sharp edges
  3. avoid sharp folding and pinching the cables
  4. do not mount cables to moving parts
  5. use the covers and panels used for other wires
  6. secure at regular intervals with cable ties
  7. do not cut back unused cables, carefully secure them. You may need them in your next vehicle or for the more advanced features your system is capable of!
  • Connect the components in the following order
  1. plug the GPS aerial plug into GPS aerial socket on the computer body rear
  2. plug the monitor cable labeled 'NAV unit' into the computer body rear
  3. plug the other end of the monitor cable into the monitor
  4. if you have mounted the remote holder, plug the cable from this into the socket supplied in the wiring loom
  5. plug the lead from the loudspeaker into the socket provided on the wiring loom
  6. connect the loom black and white cable to the vehicle speedo pulse generator cable Never tap speedo signals from the ABS control!
  7. connect the brown to permanent negative
  8. connect the violet wire to a feed that goes positive when the ignition is turned on
  9. connect the white/yellow wire to a feed that goes positive when reverse is selected. (so your computer will map your position exactly, even when you are reversing!)
  10. connect the grey wire to a feed that goes positive when the side or low beam are turned on. (This will change the display into it's night time mode
  11. connect the red wire to a good permanent positive feed via a 10 amp fuse

  • Initial start up
Re-connect the vehicle battery and restore normal functioning of the electrical system (clock, onboard computer, alarm system, airbag , immobiliser and radio codes.

Start the engine make sure the GPS aerial can see the sky, then insert the map CD into the computer. Confirm you have read the start up message on the screen by pressing the OK. button on your remote controller. Initialisation will begin, which can take up to 15mins. Once the satellite indicator is showing 4 or more satellites, or has turned green, make a short (10-15min) test drive along digitised roads, taking as many turns and junctions as possible. Once the vehicles' position matches the map, calibration is complete.
