Beau, my UK Nov/01 built Cooper has a similar problem to yours. As you say, the lid can't clip in place properly because the fuses are in the way. Maybe the fuses in question relate to optional equipment - hence the "mine's ok" replies above and the fact that others I've driven have been fine.
