They seem to think that it will all be official in march when the car goes on public display prior to the One and Coopers launch in june. Why would a dealer want a deposit just to go on a "local" waiting list?

We should see official photos some time in February. I will be at Geneva on the 2nd March for the launch at the Motor Show, so we should have a LOT of information by then. I'm guessing (from production "information" I have and media events I am aware of) that the car will be on sale in One and Cooper form in late June/July and the Cooper S will be around September. Educated guesses you could say.

As to why they'd want a deposit to go on a "local" waiting list? Because they did this with the MINI Cooper/One before launch, and certainly the S too. Dealers have an allocation and they will make their own lists and will usually require a deposit to be on that list.
