I have done it myself, using a MINI filter.

Drain bolt in sump has a nylon washer built into it,
so it does not have to be very tight. Oil filter cover has an o-ring in it, so that too does not need to be very tight.
I just went by feel, based on how difficult it was to un-do.
Not very scientific, but I am pretty confident that
I have not overtighted anything.

As for oil spillage - I just put a rag around the filter
housing to catch any drips, although the latent oil level
is below the lid, so the only drips you get are from the filter when its extracted. Note that the replacment only fits around one way
