As an avid MINI fan, I was waiting to purchase the next generation MINI scheduled to be released in the States in late 2006. I assumed that the next generation MINI would be more refined with upgrades to powertrain and interior features. As I read more about Peugeot building the engine and the move away from the clam shell hood, it seems like cost cutting measures are on top of the priority list.

We haven't had any French nameplates in the States for over 20 years so I don't know the quality of current Peugeot drivetrains. Can anyone fill me? Should I be concerned?

What are your predictions with the Gen 2 MINI in terms of quality and reliability?

There's lots of it on here (future variants forum). It's being built by BMW at Hams Hall in the UK anway, not Peugeot. Take a read of the main BIG thread on the new PSA Group/BMW Group joint venture to learn more.

The French engines are so good, the locals are setting fire to them in Paris !!
