There was an extra K&N cone filter lying around the house, so I decided to do a little experiment. I took off the top of the air box and attached the K&N filter to the stock piping. The filter is very large--it fills up the length of the air box. It is a little louder and seems a little more powerful (hard to judge because it was 95 out today).
Just wondering if this poses any hazard to my engine because it may be sucking in more hot air.
Or, any opinions are appreciated.

Anyone? It seems to be set up just like the ones I've seen in pictures, except there is no box around it. How much of a difference does this box really make? If it is a big difference, can I buy just the box, since I already have the filter?

What is the K&N filter code?
I was thinking of doing this myself...
BTW the boxing makes a big difference, shields the AI from hot engine air..
Loads of threads on this...

The number is RE-0810.
My brother gave me the filter because when he bought an intake for his Prelude they accidentally sent him two.
Anyway, can you buy the metal box without the filter? It seems like the filter would be at least half of the cost.

That is exactly what mine looks like. Except the filter is bigger and...cleaner. Anyway, that thread seemed as inconclusive as this one.

Thanks to this thread http://www.mini2.com/forum/engine-drivetrain-tuning/59977-diy-air-intake.html I'm going to build my own. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Well, thanks for your help. During my searching I talked to the very nice people at Oxfordmotorsports and they will sell a heat shield seperately for about $70, so I will keep that in mind if my home made heat shield does not work.
By the way, I love your icon. I can't wait for new Futurama episodes/movies in 2008.

Strangely enough, since I've had this filter just hanging there my cold start problem (which haunts many New England MINI drivers) has vanished. There is a chance that this is because of the very hot temperatures lately, but I have had the cold start problem in 90 degree weather before...
