CVT is to be axed for the second generation MINI.

I had one as a courtesy car and can't say I am surprised, it did not suit the MINI at all.

This is quite (well, very) old news.

The CVT has a lot of fans though, the CVT Cooper I just couldn't get used to to be honest, the Auto S I liked a lot (surprisingly).

To be quite honest CVT boxes have never worked properly and have had reliability issues ever since Ford and Fiat introduced them. One of the problems is the belt that can stretch or snap. The Borg Warner system was always much better. The latest autos that are essentially a manual gearbox that is computer controlled are significantly better than both of the above and that is what the 2nd Gen MINI will have.

I know they rated the S Auto box, but the press never liked the CVT fitted on the Cooper and One

Yeah as a ex-cvt owner i had many issues with the box it isnt the most reliable thing.

but now with the new MCS R56 coming in Auto i might consider getting one.
depending on the choice of box bmw is offering

From talking to a friendly man at a Mini dealership (the manager) no names, not going to break a good friendship, having read the Optional Equipment list (New Mini Hatch R56) both the Cooper and Cooper S will have a 6 Speed Auto including steptronic gearshift paddles. This may not be new to most, but to some it will be...but this is the interesting bit, the Auto is expected to be available for the Cooper in December 2006, but not until March 2007 for the Cooper S...and I will be placing an order for mine in November!
