I just have had the software fix for the cold start done in the last few days. Arr the S now starts first time. :D :D

The first thing that I noted was, “Hay who stole my big hole in power in first gear that I use to have” Yep that’s right it’s almost gone, thank god no more high RPM’s to get going in first. The next thing I noted was “ who put these extra ponies in my engine.” Boy did it want to rev and lots smoother and harder in acceleration. Whole new car to drive, even more fun if that’s possible.

I have a few questions for anyone else that has this update done too?

Did you notice these other fixes (the ones above) besides the cold start? Or did they do something else to my MINI. Also have you got the one minus that I have found with this new software, which is when you go to change gear they have removed the little increase in RPM you used to get (well it is still there but much smaller and faster) which is good :) but they have replaced it with the engine seems to hold its RPM for about 3 seconds after you remove your foot off the gas pedal. I am still trying to get use to it when changing gears. :)

Over all a great fix to get done.

So the thing still hangs onto engine speed between gears? I find this frustrating when shifting between 1st and 2nd. You seem to have to wait forever for the revs to drop.

So, are you saying that instead of the revs dropping away, the engine just hangs onto the revs?

Im not sure if I had the software updated when my car was in for an oil change last week, or if its just the fact that Ive recently passed 2000kms, but the engine seems so much smoother(not that it wasnt before) and it also dosnt do the surging/hesitation thing anymore, plus it really feels like the power has increased.

Ill find out if any updates were done next week.

Yep it just sits their at the old RPM, tried all modes that I can think of. eg air con on,off;engine hot or cold; just coasting in or out of gear etc etc.

I am getting use to it but the first few days it was annoying.

Hmmm...I got the software upgrade, expecting that the acceleration issue would be solved along with the cold start issue. My MCS still didn't start on one or two occasions (after the upgrade), but has been starting well at other times.

I've noticed that shifting has been a little jerkier. Maybe it's because of this RPM thing that you've mentioned. I'll check it out.

Have you noticed if your fuel efficiency is dropping? My car seems to get poorer gas mileage. When I fill up my tank again, I'll calculate it and see if it's true or not.

i'm in Arlington as well. which dealer did the fix for you? was it a quick re-program or did they send you computer away to be reprogrammed? i've had the cold start issue every day for the past 2-3 weeks.

I went to Mini of Sterling. They kept my car for 6 days and didn't give me a loaner. They had to take the ECU out of my car and mail it to MINI National in New Jersey. They said that they would be able to do it in-house in a month or so (around September 20th). They've done a couple other MCS's and they have been averaging a week to do the upgrade.

I have not noted the fuel efficiency is any worst than before. But would not suprise me if this was the case, as their does seem to be a more power. Will take more note of how much fuel I am now using. But I have always seemed to get better than some on here. Best 6.1 l/100 and worst was 13.5 l/100. :D

should I calculate my fuel efficiency in kilometers per liter?

I just talked to my dealer Keeler, Albany, NY yesterday and service said the cold start software fix had not been certified by EPA yet. Funny how Donut was able to get it done. Not a good sign that the customers know more than the service tech's.

Thanks again mini2 for the info.

Not certified by the EPA? Hmmm...that doesn't sound good--especially with the fact that all automobiles have to pass emissions testing where I live.

I just calculated my fuel efficiency. (I usually fill up at half a tank.) I got approximately 24.4mpg. I've been averaging between 22mpg and 26mpg, so I guess the drop in fuel efficiency was all in my imagination.

Hey Amigo donut you must be racing all the time to get that average thats what I get . I got a lead foot anyway:rolleyes: I met the guy and he had told me that his "S" was getting him 36 mpg on the highway. I was blunt and told him NO WAY JOSE, and he swore by it, his average speed was 80 to 90. I'm going this weekend to Oralndo and Possibly to Ft.Lauderdale for the meet, you guys down there expect the ALL Silver(no Blk top) Cooper "S" with Space Cloth. I'll be bringing my eldest son and my parents who are visiting fro Puerto Rico. Hasta Luego!!(Till later for you that don't understand;) )

Maybe I'm a bad driver, but I like to accelerate quickly and the MCS doesn't feel good at low RPM's, so I keep it between 2500 and 3000. That's probably why my fuel efficiency is low.

If you talked to Kayla, then I wouldnt put too much faith in those comments. Shes not exactly a PhD candidate, if you know what I mean.

I use 92 or 93 octane every time and I have trouble starting almost every morning. I spose its time to drive the 250 miles to the nearest dealer.

Just picked up my August build Cooper S today. No problems with starting so far and when I asked my dealer he said that all the cars starting with August builds had the cold start fix installed at the factory. He also said that his demo S was an older build car and had the problem. He said that the on cars prior to August build dates, the ECU must be sent to the VPC to be fixed. He also said that by next month most dealerships should be able to program the fix themselves.

I attribute the rev stickiness to a heavy flywheel, which would tend to make a small-engined car such as ours seem more substantial. I do agree, however, that this trait is annoying.

We use 98 RON gas here, and my car does it. Sorry :(

I received my MCS Chili Red 3AUG02. At 500 miles it started the dreaded cold start phenomenon (ambient temp. 80 degrees with 70% plus humidity). Had to drive around the block before moving into traffic as it may not go. After 150 meters was OK. At 2300 miles the symptons have disappeared. This morning, no problem. ECU learning?

Called my dealer in Atlanta to schedule my EBCS for maintenance to get the cold start software fix and was told that the software load needed to resolve the cold start issue required at least three more revisions before it would be available (at least another 90 days). So whats going on? How can some dealers have the software upgrade while other dealers are peddeling the wait another 90 days story? Where is the disconnect between what Mini owners are reporting in the forum and the info dealers are handing out? I hope this isn't a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand in doing, visa V, poor communications between Mini USA and the dealer network.

Does that mean I'll have to bring my MCS in 3 more times to get this problem fixed?

Amigos, I just went thru this BS here in JAX, Fl, they told me that there no avail upgrade as of YET. Well I recieved the MINI email and I went off politely on them and gave them my number. Greg Zilfen(very helpful) the sales manager spoke about it and he told me he'll check on it, the guys at MINI sales Nicholas and Brian great as usual. But the Service department was lost on this one, I got the run arounf for TWO days, luckily I live across the street and I have another vehicle I trying to sell. I hope MINIUSA reads my email cause I am very perturbed not to say MAD, I do understand we have a new vehicle BUT DAMN lets get our communication lines OPENED between dealers and FACTORY. MINI USA lets get ROLLING

Hey Axel, I've noticed Tom Bush doesn't seem to be to up on all the MINI info. Let me know what you find out from them about the fix.

I calculated fuel efficiency again and got 32.7 mpg doing mostly highway driving. The Cold Start Fix seems to be holding up well, but I've noticed some slipping in second and third gear at low RPM's. My MCS sometimes takes a little longer to start, but it usually starts every time now.

Minimotorin I spoke to the owners of THE BANNER , the local BMW magazine yesterday at the Car show at the avenues and spoke to the owner of Rhino Motorsports(local BMW shop) authorized rep for DINAN here in JAx, Fl and they both told me that we are basically SOL on the cold start issue :( and everyone is waiting on it. Any way if you want to get together call me at 514-2810 ok;) Later amigos

Snoopy, I asked my dealer BMW Melbourne to do the cold start fix for my car today. At the end of the day, eveything else was done except the software fix. he service manager is not aware of any such fix, and BMW Melbourne is a factory owned dealer! Can you tell me where you got yours done and what is the name of your service manager? Thanks.
