After you've fitted the stalk and wiring loom you will need to have the OBC activated by a dealer.
Unfortunately you won't get the digital speedo in your early car, IIRC this only became available in about 2003.

There was a big long thread about this a while back. Where to get the bits, how to fit it all etc. But the upshot seemed to be that no-one could get the OBC activated. Those who did report back couldn't get the dealers to do it. Even dealers who agreed to do it, then claimed it was impossible to actually recode the OBC correctly.
If anyone did get it done as part of their DIY installation, I stand corrected and perhaps you could report which dealer did it.

can you not get the mile counter to show actual speed??? i thought u could hold the reset button and turn the car on and you would get into the test menu for changing what it shows, like fuel consumption etc

I Have A 2003 Cooper S Works Which Did Not Have This.
I Bought A Indicator Stalk With Button From Ebay Then Bought The Wiring Kit From Bmw [£20] Fitted It All Very Easy Using The Thread From Mini 2.
Then Went To My Dealers Stratstone Bmw In Newcastle And They Set It Up.
Ive Now Got
Temp.
Range.
Comsumption
Average Speed.
You Cant Get The Instant Speed On An Early 2003 But My Sister In Law Has A 53 Plate And She Has It On Hers.cheers Mark

Have you tried resetting it the same as the other OBC functions? With the speedo showing, hold down the OBC button on the stalk until it resets.

I have a '54 mini one and the obc shows current speed and temperature only. It would be nice to show other functions aswell.

You can get the full OBC functionality enabled by your dealer - speak to the service desk :)

What is the normal charge for the OBC to be updated with more features?

I got it done free with a service as I pointed out it would already be connected to the diagnostic/configuration computer ;)
Expect to pay £15-£25 or so, it's a quick job. Haggle with your dealer, and remind them it's Christmas :D
