I can get the 20th off so I will not have to make an 800 mile drive in 1 day.

I don't think Nick is interested in coming along (although I have to confirm that) so odds are I'll have a co-driver slot open. I'll try to firm that up in the next few days (Nicks out west at the moment).

Folks,

Prompted by a question from George, I found info on passport requirements for reentry to the USA at: Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html)

At this time, a valid drivers license is all that's needed when driving across the border into the USA. Rob's correct, a passport is necessary when flying.

And for entry from the USA into Canada, check this site: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p.../cis_1082.html (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1082.html)

Basically, all you need is a drivers license to enter Canada from the USA.

Don't forget to let your auto insurance company know you'll be driving in Canada.

True, passports are not required for land crossings, at least until June 2009.

However, a driver's license is NOT proof of citizenship, which is officially required for both directions of travel. So if you don't bring a passport, bring some other proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

If you only bring a driver's license, you MIGHT gain entry to Canada, but you could be rejected, or be forced to chug maple syrup, pronounce "about" correctly, renounce any claims of victory in the War of 1812 etc. In this case, stock up on some Timbits for "technical expenditures".

Note: if you are a US citizen planning to fly the short hop to St. Pierre (France) from St. John's as your choice of activity, you will need a passport. Canadian citizens only require proof of citizenship.

Yes!

Oh, you meant the other Peter . . .

Actually, to steal his thunder, Peter is planning on Conquering the Cabot!

And there may be another driver, too . . .

The number of travelers is climbing, the date is getting closer . . . I'm getting psyched!

Hey Peter, you going on this trip?

No, not the car!

I'm working the polls tomorrow morning (inside the polling place checking in the voters, not outside campaigning for the winner).

Actually, I need to be there at 5:45 a.m., so I should head to bed.

Anyway, on Tuesday or Wednesday I will contact the Abba B&B to book some rooms.

I've asked Ross via PM to check the ferry schedules (thanks, Ross, for clarifying the "entry documents"), so hopefully we'll have an update soon.

Pete

The updated ferry info is now at ArcticMini.com

ferry info (http://www.arcticmini.com/2008ferry.htm)

Please don't make your own reservation. To join the group reservation, PM or email me your name(s), licence plate (if a driver), and let me know if you want your own cabin, or are willing to share.

If you are not certain about going on the trip - it's better to get in the group reservation, and I can make changes later.

Remember them? How could I forget? And they were cheeks and tongues my dear. Lips would just be silly.

Wow, that the second time I have ever heard of having Cod Checks. 1st time was a little local place in Dennis Port, Cape-cod. Kind of place where the music stops when a non local comes in the door. LOL

I have contacted the Abba Inn. While they don't have 4 rooms with 2 beds each, given the season they may have 8 beds available. I've spoken with the owner, who was out of the Inn, and sent a follow up email at his request. He'll let me know if there's anything he can do.

Abba Inn and Gower House - St. John's Downtown (http://www.abbainn.com)

I can get a "family and friends" rate at the Courtyard by Marriott. They have rooms available at that rate for CDN$99.00 (two beds per room). I'm not sure if they have four rooms at this rate, however.

https://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-photos.mi?marshaCode=yytcy&pageID=HWHOM

So, do you have a preference for the Abba Inn or the Courtyard, assuming both have space available? Is your preference based on lowest cost? If necessary, would you be willing to pay a few dollars (say CDN$10) more per night for one or the other?

All Set!

I have made a reservation for 4 rooms with 2 beds each at the Calais Motor Inn

The Calais Motor Inn (http://www.calaismotorinn.com/)

The rate is US$54.00 per room.

The reservation is for Thursday night, February 14th.

$10 a night wouldn't make a difference to me. I already have the Abba on my GPS.

The Calais was fine, very friendly.

We should try to get there earlier this year before the sidewalks are rolled up and so we won't keep the restaurant staff up.
